Wally Hedrick, painter and co-founder of the Six Gallery in San Francisco, invited Allen Ginsberg to organize a poetry reading in the summer of 1955, but Ginsberg initially refused. After Ginsberg had completed a draft of “Howl” (which he’d been working on for more than a year), however, he agreed.
Ginsberg invited the other participants and wrote the flier copy for the 7 October 1955 event.
Ginsberg read next-to-last in the lineup, cheered on by Jack Kerouac (who wrote about the event in his 1958 novel The Dharma Bums).
Lawrence Ferlinghetti published Howl and Other Poems shortly afterward, which led to his arrest on obscenity charges.

Six Gallery in Milan ⏤ Curated by David Lopez Quincoces and Fanny Bauer Grung
Six Gallery is a new location in Milan, between design, greenery and underground atmospheres. A project with a unique identity, that brings together a design gallery, a bistro and a green design boutique. Curated by husband-and-wife team David Lopez Quincoces and Fanny Bauer Grung, from architecture office Quincoces-Dragò, the space is set up around a courtyard, an unexpected place ⏤ an inspiring combination of typical Milanese elements and exotic accents of a riad.
Six Gallery // Smile Like A Switch
You smile on and off like a switch I write silly songs to get rich, But it's honest work when You've tried just as hard to stay sick Grow old and grow out your mistakes Firm grasp or occasionally sane Nothing I do or say, Make peace with your face when it's fake I'll give you what I've got to give Life's hard but its harder to live, And there's always dead ends We act like we’re on sinking ships
