KENSINGTON HOMMIES... GOT YOU, BROE'
So, this music video is another one close to my heart. Just before, or during, I can't remember, I said to my (African National and former refugee) bf that we should do something for the brodas n sistas at Kensington Refugee Centre, having experienced those challenges himself.
The people that were there (or are, but I see there are very many less after many of them got opportunities, accommodation etc) are the group of refugees who were housed at the Anglican Church on Green Market Square.
I had followed their story, sometimes walking past there, just to greet and show my face and solidarity, a few years back.
I love Simmy as an artist. She is of Nigerian heritage, I think, with maybe some Somali. If not, she has perfected the female, Somali vocal sound. I'm always impressed with that very strong influence noticeable in her vocals.
Back to Kensington Refugee Centre...
Then, when the corona virus started they were moved to an empty plot of land in Kensington.
I worried that they were not receiving any help from both the government, their embassies (where applicable) and from Cape Town society, at large. Which was surprising as we are a very cohesive society that doesn't wait for our overtaxed government: we get things done , by getting involved.
AH... AFRIKA! YOU NO, NAH, HA TO DO.. TANK GOD FOH DEH SUZIES NAH...
So, despite the fact that I was not personally involved, I know they got a lot attention, visitors and offers, so... I'm really grateful to everyone who did and was by the means, to get involved.
So, the night the fire brigade was there, about a month or month and a half ago, I walked past, just checking if everything's good... That's how I know there are only a few people left there now. But, 👏👏🤲 thanks God...
