Christmas Preparation of the Shopping Kind

At this time of year, the savvy shopper should be making a list and checking it twice as the pre-Christmas sales loom into view towards the end of next month. Black Friday (BF) will be upon us before you can criss-cross a Brussel sprout. It usually occurs around the third weekend of November and last year saw the bargains continue into the following week. However, many of the best deals could be found on the Friday alone, so buyers beware!

I can’t give my own list away but here are some great ideas for presents that may be discounted.

For her: Skandium are selling gorgeous mini-umbrellas by Marimekko. They retail at £36 but there is usually a 15% discount on offer during BF.

For him: One of my favourite independent retailers still in Floral Street WC2 is the Tin Tin shop. It stocks colourful stationery, books and my particular favourite, Tin Tin’s model rocket. Last year the shop participated in BF with a 25% discount on some items.

 For the home: I’m heading back to Skandium to keep an eye on the stylish and beautifully designed serving spoon below, (Nigella sported one in her last TV series). £32 but don’t forget the 15% discount on BF.

 For the party: The Lucky Voice Karaoke machine. A device that transforms your computer into the O2 Arena. You will need WiFi for this stylish karaoke set with its choice of pink, turquoise and gold microphones. Around £70 from most big stores, ebay and electronics stockists.

For the run-up to the big day, (not Christmas but BF, of course) check out the alerts on retailer websites as they are discounting almost on a daily basis with usually a 10% discount for first-time online purchases.  

Remember the advice I always give on these occasions: if you see something you think is a 10 out of 10, buy it. You might lose out if it’s in high demand.

 Another tip is to look out for half-price toiletries and cosmetics in the big department stores. John Lewis were selling half-price Cowshed products last year and there were some great deals at Elizabeth Arden counters too.
