The firearm was smuggled in illigally from the US. How would banning handguns from law abiding citizens have helped that? Might as well ban car dealerships because drunk drivers kill people.
Another pro-gun advocate who is clueless:

Yes in this case the gun came from the USA, but in recent years there has been a surge of ‘responsible gun owning Canadians’ who are being irresponsible and becoming illegal gun suppliers.
Want to fix this, Americans? Start regulating your gun trade. That’ll stop illegal guns coming over the border.
In the meantime we can stem the flow of illegal guns coming from the Toronto area with this ban. Handguns are already restricted in Canada. This is not a drastic move.
