She gave a small sigh as he moved but otherwise said nothing. If the look on his features was anything to go by, he’d clearly realized his mistake; thus giving her no reason to point it out. Instead, she opted for offering assistance. Even if he wouldn’t accept; the least she could do was try. 

          “---I could help you with that wound if you want... or I mean, I could take you to a doctor? You need to get that looked at though...”

Peter had come over to Jason’s house, as he most times did. Things had gotten bad at Peter’s place, but tonight they had been bad at Jason’s. It had quieted down after Peter got there, but Jason didn’t want to risk anything.

“I’ll sleep on the floor. It’s no big deal, as long as you don’t mind sleeping with one blanket.” He smiled softly, but Peter tugged him over to the bed by his arm. Jason nodded, and said nothing as he laid next to him, but scooted back to give him some room.

“I’m sorry.” Jason said finally. “I would have been able to make a comfortable bed thing on the floor if my parents weren’t being shitty tonight.”

“It’s fine.” Peter muttered, turning onto his side to face Jason.

Jason looked at Peter for a moment, watching his face, then turned onto his side to face him. He had known Peter forever. It wasn’t weird of them to share a bed. He wasn’t sure why he was even apologizing for it. 

“Are you even tired?” Jason let out a soft laugh, which made Peter smile.

“Not really,” He admitted. “Now that I think about it.”

“Jesus.” Jason murmured. He reached out, gently running his fingers through Peter’s hair. Peter leaned back a bit and Jason pulled his hand back. “What would you rather I do, Gordy?” He smirked, and Peter shook his head.

“Shut up.” Peter smiled, rolling over onto his back.

Jason scooted closer. “Pete.”

“What?” Peter looked over, and Jason leaned in, pressing a soft kiss to the other boy’s lips. 

Peter didn’t move away this time.

It was dark. Jason told his parents he’d be at Peter’s, and Peter didn’t tell his parents anything. They went on a walk. Though, it was mostly Jason dragging Peter around and Peter grabbing his jacket or his hand to keep up.

“How long have we known each other, Pete?” Jason asked finally, after a silence that seemed to drag on.

“A long fucking time. Why?” 

Jason slowed down so Peter could be directly at his side. He hesitated his next question.

“How many times have I told you I loved you?”

A beat.

“A lot.” Peter shrugged. “Mostly when I’m drunk or being stupid.” Jason squeezed Peter’s hand gently. “What’re you getting at, Jay?”

“I dunno.” He shrugged. “I was just…thinking out loud.”

Peter nodded. Another silence, and Jason could see Peter was growing a bit antsy, so Peter began talking about something else to fill it all up. Jason watched him, his heart aching. He wanted to apologize for making things uncomfortable now, but that would make it worse.

Plus, Peter never let go of Jason’s hand.

“There are a lot of times that…I didn’t say it when I wanted to.” Jason interrupted him. Peter went silent. “I don’t…I don’t want this to be one of those times.”

“Jason–”

“And it’s not…It’s not the way I’ve meant it before. Because before, I didn’t think…” He trailed off.

“Yeah.” Peter muttered.

“You don’t have to say it back. I mean, you never did before, I never expected you to and it never hurt me when you didn’t. But you don’t have to say it back.”

“You haven’t said it yet.” Peter chuckled, and Jason sensed some nervousness.

“You don’t have to say it back.” Jason repeated. 

Then, they both stopped. Peter pulled Jason back a bit, then tugged the other boy down by his collar, and kissed him firmly. Jason could taste the cigarettes on his breath. 

“You don’t have to say it at all.” Peter said finally when he pulled back, letting Jason go. “Because then I won’t have to say it back.”

They kept walking.

It was after a game. They had won, of course. Everyone had just left the locker room, and Jason was the last one. He took his stuff and headed back out to the field. It was empty now, as well, and Jason replayed the game in his mind.

“Good game, Jay.” He looked and watched Peter walk over to him from the stands.

“You were here?” Jason walked his direction to meet him in the middle.

“Near the end.” He shrugged. “I figured I might as well. Had nothin’ better to do.”

Jason smirked, raising an eyebrow. “Is that so? Well, were you impressed?” He bent down a bit so he and Peter were eye-to-eye.

Peter chuckled. “Not hardly.” He turned to walk back. Jason followed.

“I’m hurt.” He pouted. “I thought I played really great, buuut I guess I was wrong.”

Peter turned his head slightly to glance at Jason over his shoulder, not slowing his pace. “never said you played bad. Just said I wasn’t impressed.”

“Still stings, Petey.” He tilted his head to the side a bit. “Where’re we going?” 

Peter, instead, said nothing, smirking as he walked under the bleachers, not taking his eyes off of Jason. He followed.

“Under the bleachers. The place middle schoolers go to sneak a quick kiss. Or to hide out in general.” He leaned against the beam supporting the bleachers. “Which of those is the reason we’re under here, hm?”

“Both, maybe?” Peter grinned.

“Both?” Jason stepped closer to Peter. “Maybe I can impress you some other way, then?”

“Shut up.” Peter let out a little laugh, and Jason pulled him closer, bending down slightly to kiss him.

“We should go somewhere.” Jason murmured.

“Mm? Where?” Peter turned onto his back. He had been laying down, his head in Jason’s lap.

“Anywhere.” He paused a moment. “We always talk about it. Ever since we were kids.”

“Where?” Peter repeated, smiling and folding his arms across his chest.

“Anywhere, man. Anywhere away from our shitty parents.”

“Yeah.”

“We can take turns driving, if you want. I’ll even let you smoke in the car. I don’t give a shit.”

“How courteous of you. I would’ve done it anyway.”

“I mean it.”

“I know.”

“We just…We need to go.”

“Let’s do it, then.”

“They’d hunt us down in a heartbeat. And Cheryl…”

“What d’you want to do, then?”

“I want to drive somewhere.”

“Then do it. Then we’ll return to our shitty fuckin’ rich-boy lives.”

“We’ll plan something another time. But let’s not just say it like when we were kids, okay? Let’s promise to do it.”

“I’m fuckin’ down, Jay. Just let me know when.”

“I promise.”

“Y’don’t have to promise.”

“I want to.” It makes me feel like I’m doing something…

“Okay.”

“You wanna go on a drive? Just like…around the block or whatever?”

“Sure.” He sat up. Jason pulled him back, kissing him quickly before letting him go.

“I promise.”

“I know.”

Jason never really cried in front of people. Not even Cheryl. He was supposed to be in control. He wasn’t the one his parents couldn’t stand. He wasn’t the one people didn’t like. So why did he have any reason to cry?

It all became too much for him at times, truth be told. The expectations, the anxiety, the fact that he was the only person that was actually taking care of Cheryl. And so much more.

Jason was sitting on his bed. Cheryl was with her Vixens and their parents were God knows where. And then, he heard it. The familiar sound. Peter. He went and opened the window, trying to wipe the tears from his eyes.

“Bad again?”

“Always fuckin’ is.” Peter climbed in. “I would’ve texted you, but I–” He noticed. Shit. “Jason?”

“Don’t worry about it. No one’s home. The blankets are in the closet, you know which one.” His voice was trembling. Stop crying, stop fucking crying. 

“Yeah, I know.” Peter’s voice softened a bit. He set a bag on the floor.

Jason went over to his bed and sat down. He knew each time, however long he kept everything bottled up, the longer it took for him for calm down when it all exploded. Peter knew that, too. But Jason had only cried in front of him once before, but Jason didn’t know Peter was there, or at least awake.

Peter went over and sat next to him. “I can go somewhere else.”

“Please don’t.” Jason didn’t look up at him. “Please don’t.”

“Okay.”

“I just...I need someone here...who knows.”

“Yeah.”

Jason leaned against Peter, though avoided putting all his weight on the other. They sat in silence for a little while, Jason leaning on Peter and Peter simply sitting with him. After a little while, Jason calmed down, wiping his eyes.

“I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay, Jay.”

Jason leaned over, kissing Peter quickly, before getting up.

“I’ll go get some blankets.” He sniffed.

Peter nodded, still slightly surprised from the kiss. “Okay...Thanks.”
