From @brownskinderm’s perspective. #repost ・・・ A couple of days ago in my hot topics segment of my story, I discussed my issue with companies using words/statements like “porcelain, white, ivory, lightener, bright, fair, fair & lovely, power white, white purity” etc to describe bleaching creams. I do think they have contributed to shaping, promoting and reinforcing eurocentric standards of beauty globally & vastly profiting off it. I know this because I grew up seeing how it normalized the practice of skin bleaching all around me. This was my first concept of what adult skincare meant as an adolescent (but that’s a story for another day). . We have such a crises of colorism especially in countries with a long history of European colonization. It has not only been fundamentally harmful in communities of color psychologically but physically given the adverse effects that result from the abuse of these products. If you travel as much as I do, it’s always been alarming to see billboards by major US brands promoting these products for their overseas market. Do i think skin bleaching creams are useful or have a place in skin care? Yes. Disorders of #Hyperpigmentation are legitimate medical issues especially in people of color who are more prone to it. However, companies have been very intentionally ambiguous in their marketing of these products to promote the use of bleaching creams as just more than remedy for medical conditions but for aesthetic purposes far more. I’m happy that the #blacklivesmatter movement is having a ripple effect in shaking the foundations of institutional racism that have gone unchallenged for so long. This is not surprising given American hegemony around the world. The recent actions by DOVE & JOHNSON & JOHNSON, is a STEP in the right direction of what I hope will be more concrete changes. .
