We love cosplay.
Specifically, we love DIY cosplay; which includes all the steps from choosing and planning a cosplay, to the execution and wearing your creation to an event.
So, let’s start at the beginning. You have chosen a character to be, and your brain is bubbling with ideas! Or, more realistically, you know what you want to do, but you have no idea where to start. We are going to briefly talk today about some of the steps that we use to help plan a cosplay here at SkinWalker, and hopefully, you will get some usefulness out of our process.
First step is to know what you want to cosplay. This can often time be the hardest part of creating a cosplay, and will take several cycles of choosing and then changing your mind. The other end of the spectrum is that you just know, and it never changes. Either way, now you have an idea of what you want to be at the end of it.
The next step is to try an map out any ideas you have for your cosplay, this can be as complex, or as simple as you’d like! At SkinWalker we usually start with a list, and graduate into doodles – if needed.
One of the benefits of doing DIY cosplay regularly is having a pile of odds and ends on hand such as, patterns, thread, leftover fabric, props, and even whole applicable wardrobe pieces. Knowing what you have on hand and ready can help in the planning process. You can make lists of things you already have for the cosplay, and things that you need to purchase, or create. Trying to incorporate things you already have not only helps keep you on a budget, it also pushes you to be creative with creating your cosplay.
Go through these planning steps as many times as you need to before you begin on the creation of your actual pieces. Ensuring that you have a solid idea in your mind makes creation easier when you begin that phase!
