Norwegian Forest Cat

Called "Skogskatt" in Norwegian and also known as "Wegies" in English, this cat breed is native to Northern Europe. It's breed originated from cats that were brought to Norway by the Vikings from Great Britain around 1000 AD and interbred with farm and feral cats already in Norway to make the breed that we know as Norwegian Forest Cats today. During WWII they became almost extinct, but efforts by the Norwegian Forest Cat Club were made to create a breeding program to revive them. They were registered as an official breed in 1970s. 

This breed is beautiful with an extremely thick coat to arm them against the cold Scandinavian winters. Their top coat is long and glossy with water shedding hairs, an they have a wool like coat underneath to keep them extra warm. They are strong and larger than average cats, with a sturdy and long body and bushy tails. Their head is long with a triangular shape and they have large, almond shaped eyes that can be of any color but green or a light orange is pretty common. They also have varied coat colors and their ears have small tufts of hair in them, like a lynx. They also have tufts of hair between their paws and they have strong claws being very proficient climbers. 

They are generally quiet and soft spoken, but are known to get louder if they share a home with a dog. They are very kind, well mannered, and a great family pet. Wegies are social and good with people and can adapt to share their home with other animals as well. They are known to be very patient and tolerant, ideal to families with small children. They are intelligent, curious, and quick learners. Very playful and fun spirited, they do demand lots of attention and will find ways to amuse themselves if not. 

To learn more about them, check them out on the web! I am a recent owner of a Skogskatt myself, and I must say that they are an absolute delight. From my experience with out cat, their patience really amazes me. I've never met a cat more calm or tolerant of me picking her up, carrying her, and even holding her like a little baby sometimes. She is incredibly sweet and affectionate, and also loves going outside on her leash! Their playfulness and energy is very true, though, and she does require lots of playtime and amusement.
