Slave Old Man by Patrick Chamoiseau is a gorgeous novel translated from the French and Creole by Linda Coverdale. It tells the story of an enslaved man who escapes and flees into the woods in Martinque, a devilish mastiff and master of the plantation at his heels. In the forest, present reality slips into history, and folktales come to life; both begin to weigh heavily on the three protagonists in different ways, rejuvenating the enslaved man and pushing him forward. The prose is dreamy and truly beautiful, and the story is painted in vivid color and life. An excellently written work.

My friend told me about a month ago that a birthday gift was on its way. Last night it arrived: Call Number, a library-inspired book subscription box that celebrates contemporary Black literature and authors (curated by a real academic librarian). The book is Slave Old Man by Patrick Chamoiseau; it came with a ton of beautiful things including a poem by Aimé Césaire, a gorgeous sun-and-moon necklace, and an "I ❤️My Library" keychain, as well as a card with the card number and info of the book.
