You heard it before breakfast even started.“Harry Potter and Cho Chang kissed!”
At first, you thought it was a joke. Hogwarts always loved to gossip, and Harry was everyone’s favorite subject. You rolled your eyes, pretended it didn’t sting, pretended it didn’t matter. But by the time you got to the dungeons, the story had spread like wildfire — the Room of Requirement, the DA meeting, Cho crying, and Harry comforting her. And kissing her.
You sat in the dim light of the Slytherin common room, staring blankly at your book. The words swam before your eyes. You hadn’t actually read a single sentence in the last twenty minutes. Of course this would happen. Of course. You were a Slytherin. He was Harry Potter…the Gryffindor hero who everyone wanted a piece of. You should’ve known better than to think it would last.
“Y/N.” You blinked, looking up. Draco was standing in front of you, arms crossed, expression sharp and irritated , but not at you. “You look like someone cursed your cat,” he said. You frowned. “Just tired.” “Liar.” Blaise, lounging on the couch, smirked. “She’s sulking because of Potter.”Draco’s jaw tightened. “What did he do?”“Nothing,” you said too quickly. Blaise arched a brow. “Rumour says he kissed Cho Chang. I take it that’s not nothing?” You felt your stomach twist. “It’s just a rumour,” you murmured, voice quiet. Draco scoffed. “Potter and rumours go hand in hand. But I wouldn’t put it past him. He thrives on attention, doesn’t he?” “Draco—” “I’m serious,” he snapped. “You’ve been sneaking around for months for what? For him to go and make a fool of you in front of the whole castle?” “Draco.” Your voice cracked. “Please stop.” He paused. The anger drained from his face, replaced by concern. “You don’t actually believe it, do you?” You swallowed hard. “I don’t know what to believe.” Blaise sighed, sitting up. “You won’t get any answers staring at your textbook, Y/N. If he really cares, he’ll explain himself. But don’t let it eat you alive before you even ask.” Draco muttered something under his breath about idiot Gryffindors, but then a tapping noise interrupted him.
An owl perched on the windowsill, feathers wet with rain. A small note dropped into your lap. You recognized his handwriting instantly.
Meet me tonight. Astronomy Tower. Please. ~Harry
Draco read over your shoulder, grimacing. “Of course it’s the Astronomy Tower. Typical.” Blaise nudged you gently. “Go. If you don’t, you’ll just sit here and drown in what-ifs.” You hesitated, folding the letter carefully. “What if it’s true?” Draco’s eyes softened. “Then I’ll hex him myself.”
The night air was cold when you climbed the stairs to the Astronomy Tower. The rain had stopped, but the smell of it still lingered, fresh and sharp. You hesitated by the archway, heart hammering so hard it hurt.
Harry stood by the railing, hands shoved into his pockets, hair even messier than usual. He turned at the sound of your footsteps.
“Y/N.” His voice was soft — hopeful, careful.
You didn’t smile. “You wanted to see me.”
He nodded. “Yeah. You’ve been avoiding me.” “Maybe I didn’t feel like talking to someone who’s apparently been snogging other girls,” you said bitterly.
His face fell. “Y/N, it’s not—”
“Everyone’s talking about it, Harry!” Your voice shook. “Everyone. Do you have any idea how that feels? To sit there and hear people whisper about you and laugh behind your back?” “I didn’t mean for it to happen,” he said quickly. “Cho, she kissed me, and—”
“And you kissed her back?” you cut in.
He froze.
“That’s what they’re saying,” you whispered, tears stinging your eyes. “And honestly, why wouldn’t you? She’s perfect. Pretty. Popular. Not a Slytherin.” Without realising how insecure you sounded, you kept going.
Harry stepped closer. “Y/N, don’t do that. Don’t put yourself down.”
“Why not? It’s true!” You took a shaky step backward. “I should’ve known better than to think you’d actually choose me. You’re Harry Potter. The Golden Boy. And I’m—” Your voice broke. “I’m just the girl you have to hide.”
“Stop,” he said sharply. His voice trembled, but his eyes were fierce. “You are not just the girl I hide. You’re the one person who makes me feel like I can breathe. You’re the reason I can get through the day without losing my mind.”
You looked away, tears slipping down your cheeks. “Then why kiss her?”
“I thought I was protecting you.” His voice cracked. “Everyone already suspected something between me and Cho. If I denied it, they would’ve started digging. And if they found out about us—you’d be dragged into everything. The war. The danger. The gossip.” “So you hurt me instead?”
He winced, guilt flashing across his face. “I know how stupid that sounds. I panicked. I thought keeping you safe meant keeping you a secret. But I was wrong.”
You pressed your lips together, shaking your head. “You should’ve trusted me enough to decide for myself.”
“I know,” he whispered. “And I hate that I made you doubt how much I love you.”
You froze.
“What?” you breathed.
Harry took another step closer, his voice soft but steady now. “I love you, Y/N. I love you more than I can explain. And I don’t care what anyone says… I don’t care if they all find out. I’d rather the whole world know than let you think I don’t want you.”
The tears came faster now, but they didn’t burn the same way.
“You’re such an idiot,” you murmured, voice trembling. Harry smiled weakly. “I’ve been told that.”
“Draco’s going to hex you.”
He laughed, a warm laugh that made your heart ache. “Yeah, I’m sure he will.”
You tried to glare, but your lips curved despite yourself. Harry’s hand brushed your cheek, thumb wiping away a tear.
“I don’t deserve you,” he said quietly. “But I’m going to spend every day proving that I do.” Your chest ached in the best possible way. “I was so scared you’d choose her,” you whispered. “That maybe you realized being with me was a mistake.”
He shook his head, eyes shining. “Y/N, being with you is the best thing that’s ever happened to me. Cho was a moment of confusion. You’re everything else.”
You laughed softly through your tears. “You really are terrible at explaining things.”
“I’m better at showing them,” he said, smiling nervously.
Before you could respond, his hands framed your face, and he kissed you. It wasn’t desperate or rushed this time…it was slow, steady, full of everything words couldn’t say. The world fell away; there were no rumours, fear nor insecurity…Just the sound of your hearts and the quiet rustle of the night.
When you finally pulled apart, your foreheads stayed pressed together, breath mingling in the cold air.
“I love you,” he whispered again. “I’ll say it as many times as it takes for you to believe it.” You smiled, cheeks flushed. “You’re still an idiot.”
He grinned. “But I’m your idiot.”
You laughed and leaned into him, letting his arms wrap around you. You fit against him perfectly, the way you always did, like the world was finally right again.
He kissed your hair, voice soft against your ear. “Let them talk, Y/N. Let them make all the rumours they want. I’ll tell them the truth myself if I have to.”
You looked up at him, eyes glistening. “And what’s the truth?”
“That I’m hopelessly, ridiculously in love with a Slytherin,” he said, smiling. “And I wouldn’t change it for anything.”
You laughed, pressing another kiss to his jaw. “You really do say all the right things when you want to.”
Harry chuckled, holding you closer. “Only for you.”
The stars glittered above you, and for the first time all week, you felt like you could breathe again. Whatever came next, it didn’t matter. Because tonight, under the soft glow of the Astronomy Tower, none of that could touch you.You had him, and he had you. And that was enough.
