#small winter stonefly

Hello! Ive been noticing some smallish bugs around a lot recently (im in northcentral wv) and after a wee bit of research i think theyre winter stoneflies! I read an article claiming that seeing them could mean spring/warmer weather is coming sooner and also that theyre better indicators than groundhogs..lol. Do you have any thoughts on this?

Cute! Tell them I said hello. They don’t necessarily mean spring is coming soon. Adults emerge from November all the way into summer so it’s not uncommon to see them even in the dead of winter.

Some little dudes I found while picking up my trail cam. A red velvet mite, some sort of Weirdboy, and a freshwater isopod! He is in the water, do not worry.

Here are more photos of the Weirdboy, but he kept crawling up my arm so it was hard to get good pictures. Found in southern Ontario!

Ohhh love the velvet mite! An excellent friend. And the aquatic isopod is really living its best, moist life. The weirdboy looks like a small winter stonefly in Capniidae, probably! Thanks for sharing all these nice pals :)
