I'm watching Smaller and Smaller Circles (2017)
Tonight's Film Pick: #SmallerAndSmallerCircles and what a treat it was for a murder mystery fan like me. With the film adaptation released in 2017, this was one of those films that I regret not seeing. But with the quarantine, @tbastudiosph was kind enough to make their films available online and luckily, Smaller and Smaller Circles was one of them. Early on in the movie, I immediately got On The Job and BuyBust vibes, even if it's not an Erik Matti film. What got me interested from the get go was they didn't hold back and went ahead with introducing a murder case. No intro of any character, haven't established the overall setting, just BAM. Murder. The story was beyond anything I could have imagined. I am so impressed at the attention to detail for a locally-produced serial killer film. Fiction though as it may be, I really couldn't avoid appreciating the real-ness of their agenda apart from the murders. (I mean, we don't have serial killers probably because those claiming lives don't need to hide since they're protected by their badges and so-called laws.) More than the story and production, what kept surprising me was the ensemble. What a rich number of veteran actors and actresses! The ones that shocked me most? Gladys Reyes, Tessie Tomas, and Juana Change. Smaller and Smaller Circles definitely deserves to be appreciated more because it's not everyday that we come across local murder mysteries, let alone one of this calibre. This actually has the potential of being drawn out as a series. Just the premise alone with Father Gus and Father Jerome as investigatiors is quite a refreshing concept already! Thank you F.H. Batacan for this amazing story. Looking forward to reading the multi-awarded book!! 10/10 for me. Please watch it on TBA Studios' YT Channel!! P.S. What a coincidence that I decided to watch this on a Saturday night. *shivers* https://www.instagram.com/p/CBYh13SF8Hs/?igshid=1166d579mzrfn
#LBCJulyChallenge for Day 19: Suspense book adapted into a movie These are my top favorite thriller / suspense books that were adapted into movies, where I also love the movie adaptations so much. The other book-turned-movie that I love is The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown, which is not included in this photo because I have it in e-book format 😄 What's your favorite suspense book-turned-movie? 😊 #AngelsAndDemons #DanBrown #SmallerAndSmallerCircles #FHBatacan https://www.instagram.com/p/B0FxaLcnA_e/?igshid=ix43difs73n8
#LBCJulyChallenge for Day 13: Book where someone was murdered These two books came to mind when choosing the books for this photo challenge. I still have to read Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky, a story about a law student who murdered an old money lender to prove a theory. Excited to read this, since I've read online that this is a very good classic. I already read Smaller and Smaller Circles by F.H. Batacan during the Asian Readathon last May, it's a Philippine mystery / crime fiction about the murdered teenage boys from Payatas. This is a very good novel, I highly recommend it to all. 😊 What's your favorite crime fiction? Looking for more good recommendations 😂 #CrimeAndPunishment #FyodorDostoevsky #SmallerAndSmallerCircles #FHBatacan https://www.instagram.com/p/Bz2qNL4nArK/?igshid=u0bj48hlo71n

"Time and forgetfulness are the allies of abusers." I've seen the book in bookstores for years, but it took seeing early trailers of the movie for me to get around to reading it. Walked through an ambush rainstorm to watch @smallerandsmallercircles , then managed to make it to the Meet and Greet event afterwards today. The book was so engrossing! FH Batacan really captured the nuances and mechanics of life/politics/criminal justice in Manila in the 1990's well--aspects, which, sadly are still mostly prevalent today. Very well-thought-out characters and a deliberately-paced plot. . . . S P O I L E R S . . . Naturally, many changes were made from book to movie. Some were pretty clever and welcome tweaks, like the sex/gender changes on Councilor Mariano and Mrs. Salustiano's son. Some were justified, like reducing Mrs. Salustiano's son's role (how he knew what he knew was pretty weird anyway). Some others, like Atty. Arcinas' appearance and portrayal, as well as how the climactic confrontation played out, might need a second viewing or two to better comprehend. They don't really ruin the story or the experience, though. (Damn, so this is how it feels to be that snob who just wants an excuse to say "the book was better.") On the whole, the movie felt much faster-paced than expected. Some details had to be eschewed in the interest of that faster pace, and I can see where some viewers (both people who did and didn't read the book) can have plenty of questions about certain things. Again, hopefully further viewings will answer those questions. That, I guess, makes this a great movie. It is so rich in detail that it really does need multiple viewings to, well, #LookCloser and fully appreciate the story. #SmallerAndSmallerCircles #SASCMovie
I've been waiting for this. #SmallerAndSmallerCircles (at Greenhills Promenade Mall/Cinema)
