My take on the new Eagles lyrics since we’re all playing literary analysis right now-
The vibe I’m getting currently is it’s a song about trying to maintain interpersonal relationships while on tour or just being caught up in the whirlwind of the public eye in general, and how isolating/scary that can feel.
“Widow”- spouse left at home
“Sending valentines to my/bitter friends”- assuring others feeling left behind by the whirlwind that they’re still cared about even if the person can’t spend time with them directly
“One good turn deserves another”(repeated)- once you’ve got momentum going, it’s hard to get out of that cycle of staying in the public eye and giving people what they want if they’re excited about what you’re doing
“A sister a brother a lover a mother/I’m her kinda girl and she’s my kinda boy/etc”- grounding oneself in their actual personal relationships outside the public eye
“She takes a photograph and kisses it/me goodbye”- going off into the world with the acknowledgement of that grounding even if it feels intangible
“Everyone dies in the cathedral”- being worshipped and revered on such a large scale is dangerous and never ends well for those subjected to it so intensely without having something to ground them, especially those with tendencies towards martyrdom
