SPOILER WARNING for SML Movie: Misery
How are we feeling about the newest video? I love it! It's another one of my favorites from this year. I love when they lean into horror stuff. I feel they need to do that more often because it makes the goofy moments funnier. It doesn't feel like they're just throwing "funny" at the wall and seeing what sticks. There's a story to coincide with it, making jokes flow naturally.
The silliness of armadillos in the roads is really funny to me because Elaina's creepily sweet tone sells it. Her “silly goose,” “heavens to betsy,” “oh goodness” schtick is even more hilarious in a cringy (positive) sort of way. Her crashout over Cody being straight for an episode is so…me to be honest. Really encapsulates the people who've gotten attached to characters as they are. But checkmate! You can tell she's a fake fan because she says Cody being gay is his whole personality. Him being gay didn't take over him completely until the most recent SML era, the puppet era! ☝️🤓 (I'm half kidding)
Her whole outfit fits the vibe of the character she's playing too and makes her actions funnier! Forgetting you watch SML for a moment, seeing this dainty lady dressed so cozily suddenly shoot a puppet policeman with a gun as big as her torso would be a shock! She's got absurdist humor down and I hope she gets to play more creepy characters. Even if it's a puppet! I can imagine Susanne going mad like Elaina’s obsessive fan character. I'd even be happy if an entirely new character was introduced with that obsessive personality.
Chris is good too, not as good as Elaina in my opinion, but still very good. He could convey pain and upset in his voice perfectly but expression-wise not so much. Where I think he really shines is in physical humor. The car crash and subsequently him laying against the airbag, him struggling to get around in the wheelchair, him dropping the typewriter on Elaina like a cartoon character with an anvil, and him crawling up to the red couch with Brooklyn Guy on his arm. Good stuff!
Although I love this episode, I am kind of disappointed in the ending. For something so high stakes and interesting, I feel like it deserved a more dramatic ending. I also was expecting Marvin or Marvin and Jeffy to start looking for Brooklyn Guy, and by extension Pablo to get a bit of an adventure side story going. It was very sweet that Simmons tried his best but he wouldn't have been able to do it alone.
I also assume this has to be a callback to her saying Chris is her favorite crew member to work with. And while ensuring I was correct by rewatching her meet the cast, I snagged this wholesome clip for your viewing pleasure.
