The moment you met Zach, you knew that he was going to be someone special to you. He was incredibly sweet and talented, and he always treated you with respect. This seamlessly translated into your relationship when the two of you became official. He genuinely felt like your partner, picking you up when you felt low, and you doing the same for him. It did not come without its bumps, but you knew your relationship was solid. And, the day he proposed was the day that you knew he was definitely in it for the long haul - the one you were meant to find.
It was very clear to you early into the relationship that Zach was meant to be a father. You’re pretty sure you noticed it before he did. You had had the conversation about marriage and kids, and so you were aware that he did want to be a dad. Truth be told, you couldn’t imagine someone better to be a parent alongside. So, when you found out that you were officially expecting, you felt nothing but joy, and you knew that your fiancé would too. You hadn’t found the right time to tell him, but you knew that soon, you would have your chance.
Your family was having a little reunion, just so everyone could reconnect and spend some time together. You were still hiding your little secret because you wanted Zach to be the first to know. You were sitting at the large picnic table, conversing with some of your cousins, sipping subtly on your water when you heard an outcry of giggles.
You looked to the source of the noise to see that Zach had your little niece hoisted onto his shoulders, spinning carefully around to make her laugh. Some of the other little ones there were practically lined up for their turn, almost turning Zach into a human jungle gym. However, you saw nothing but the brightest genuine smile on his face. Your heart swelled at the sight, knowing that he would be just as great, if not better, with a child of your own.
You continued to watch as he ran around and played with the young ones, never once complaining. You barely even noticed when one of your cousins had called your name to ask you a question. It wasn’t until they tapped you on the shoulder to get your attention that you snapped back to reality.
“Wow, you’re really smitten aren’t you,” they chuckled.
“I can’t even lie, I really am" you sighed.
“Now I know that you two are going to be one of those really gross overly-lovey married couples,” you heard one of your other cousins chirp.
“As if they weren’t already like that before,” one of your siblings added in. You gave them a playful smack and went back to gazing at your wonderful fiancé.
When you saw one of your other cousins place her newborn in his arms, thats when your heart officially exploded for good. It looked so natural for him, like it was second nature. And, the way the sun was hitting them just right made it look like they were glowing. In that moment you knew that today was the day you told him the news. You were certain that he was going to be a great father, and you wouldn’t have it any other way.
The two of you drove home together in comfortable silence. He had one hand on the steering wheel, the other hand in yours on your lap. You raised his hand to your lips and gave it a gentle kiss. You loved seeing the subtle blush it brought to his cheeks and ears, and the small smile it brought to his face.
“I love you so much, you know that?” you told him.
“I love you too, (Y/N). Forever and always,” he replied. “And, I cannot wait to marry you.”
Now it was your turn to blush and smile. The two of you pulled into the driveway of your home. You knew that you had a picture from your first ultrasound hidden in your shared bedroom, and so you formulated a plan to finally let Zach in on the secret. You were almost giddy as you walked into the house. You convinced Zach to get a movie ready so the two of you could just relax for the rest of the evening. While he did that, you raced upstairs to grab the photo, hiding it in the large pocket of the hoodie (well, it was Zach’s hoodie technically) that you changed into.
You came back downstairs to see that Zach was already lounging on the couch, your favorite movie on the screen. You walked over and immediately curled up to him. He kissed your temple softly before pressing play and starting the movie. You laid there as the movie played when Zach spoke up softly.
“You know, I had a thought today,” he started. You looked to meet his eyes.
“I know we aren’t officially married yet, but I feel like we are really ready to have a kid of our own. I don’t know...I was just goofing around with the younger ones today and everything just clicked. And seeing how happy it made you, and how happy it made me to be around them? I think we could really do it.” He gushed, that same blush taking over his face and ears.
“You’re so cute,” you whispered to him, kissing his cheek.
“Yeah, yeah. I’m mushy, I know,” he spoke sarcastically. “I’m serious though. There’s no one in this world I would rather be a parent with. I think we could do it for real.”
“Well, I’m so glad you brought that up...” you smiled as you sat up, the movie still playing in the background. You took the ultrasound picture out of your pocket and handed it to him. You watched as his face went from confusion to the purest most absolute joyful smile you had ever seen on him.
“Are you for real???” he yelled with delight. All you could do was nod as tears welled in both your eyes. He launched on top of you, leaving small sweet kisses all over your face and neck. “When did you find out???”
“Not too long ago. I’m just about two months along. I was waiting for the right moment to tell you, and when I saw you with the kids today, I just knew.” You could see the proverbial hearts in his eyes as you told him.
“I am so happy you have no idea,” he continued to leave small kisses over your face. “We’re really going to be parents”
“Like you said. There is no one in this world I would rather be a parent with,” you smiled, finally giving him a kiss on the lips.
“Does anyone else know?” he asked you, finally sitting up and pulling you up with him.
“Nope. I wanted you to be the first.”
“God I love you.” All either of you could do in that moment was smile. You were so overwhelmed with happiness, neither of you wanted this moment to end. Zach softly rested his hands on your stomach, letting out a soft sigh. “Hi baby. I’m your dad. And we are going to love you so much.”
“You’re going to be a great parent, Zach. I know it...Only now, we have to let everyone else know.”
“Nah, they can wait. For right now, all I want is you, and baby, all to myself.”
The rest of the evening was filled with gentle kisses and soft caresses over your stomach. You had already known that the two of you would be happy about this, but you didn’t realize just how much. It was a moment you never wanted to end - just you, your fiancé, and the new little life that would arrive before you knew it. And you knew that you would be able to face it together.
