i think one of utena's greatest accomplishments on like a mechanical level is how thoroughly it gets you to believe in the illusion of the artifice. and i think that's intentional - i've seen people talk about the way the feel of the show itself mimics the process of getting embroiled in an abusive relationship, where the first few times, maybe the first few dozen times, even, something strange happens at ohtori, you find yourself sitting there and thinking "what the hell am i watching," but eventually it gets to a point where you just expect that kind of thing from ohtori, and when outsiders point out the weirdness your only explanation is a shrug of the shoulders and, "well, that's just how it is" (.. and of course there Is another separate discussion to be had about whether *that* was entirely intentional, and how much of it is just the result of ikuhara's particular style of storytelling and visual presentation, but that's for another day) - but it tells you right from the beginning that the castle is just a trick of the light, and that the duels are frivolous and ineffective and something that anthy needs to be rescued *out of* if she is to be rescued at all, and even shows us almost immediately the way these duels are perpetrated, with touga playing on miki's feelings to get him to duel utena when he begins veering dangerously close to the idea that the duels shouldn't be happening at all. and yet, as we follow utena, we begin to buy into the idea, the same as she does, that there is anything to be accomplished by winning the duels, that it means anything material that she can so much more naturally call on the power of dios, so that when the veil is finally drawn back and we can see that it really *was* just a game being played end of the world all along, that sense of hollowness hits on a much more personal level - you *have* to reckon with the fact that you weren't smarter just by being separate as part of the audience, that even though you could and should have known better than even the characters, and could and did see akio for what he was so much earlier on, you were still taken in by his illusions, by that false sense of agency as if there was anything to be gained by fighting the system from within its constraints. and that the show manages to execute that so gracefully, manages to put you under its spell so effortlessly, all so that it can remind you of your own human falliability, is really great to me

the racism in the TADC community, from Glitch Productions, to the staff employed to work on TADC who participated in racist actions, and the white queer fans who bootlick for this show is vehemently disgusting. I say this as a white queer myself:

JUST BECAUSE YOU’RE QUEER DOES NOT, WILL NOT, AND HAS NOT EXCUSED YOUR VILE, FUCKED UP BEHAVIOR.

RACISM ISN’T A “RITE OF PASSAGE” TO BEING QUEER.

YOU’RE JUST A RACIST.

JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE A MINORITY DOESN’T GIVE YOU A FAST PASS TO ASSUME IGNORANCE OF OTHER MINORITY COMMUNITIES.

For fellow white queers: Just because you’re a sexual/gender minority doesn’t give you get an all-expenses paid trip to “better than thou” when the expense is being carried on other people’s backs.
