(1/2) Hello! I'm a hearing author, I'm writing a fantasy story and I wanted to ask; is it offensive to have a race that is HoH/Deaf? The people in question are aquatic and live entirely underwater, and use a sign language to communicate. By extension: would it be offensive if the hearing people in this universe all knew and used sign language? The reason they use it is to accommodate for d/Deaf/HoH people and people with auditory processing issues. (I have auditory processing issues, so I'm

I see no issue with a deaf race, especially with underwater race. I have seen several stories with similar takes. Sign language is more logical as communication device underwater anyway, since sound doesnt carry same (and divers use signs similar to sign language).
It wouldn’t be offensive for everyone to know sign, but it would be... hm, how to put it. It would seem unrealistic to me, unless there was some explanation. Considering how hearing people treated and still to this day treat sign language on our Earth, I would be wondering how these people are different. Of course, it also depends on the overall tone of the story, how/if you are explaining other differences, etc.
