Severus owed quite a bit to the Evans family. He thought it wouldn't be that big of a deal to go on a single date. Besides Petunia would probably say no on her own when she finds out anyways.
It was quite a shock when, not only did Petunia not refuse she was on her best behavior and seemed to be really into it. She dressed to the nines, always had a smile on her face and laughed at his shitty jokes.
It was an even bigger shock that Lily seemed to be quite jealous of the whole situation.

i do really think Snape and petunia's relationship is soooo under considered. in my head they are mortal enemies. Mortal ones!! they have hated each other since they realized each's relationship with Lily was a threat to the other, but they both pushed her away in the end and it had nothing to do with the other one, only themself...wait...mirrors? maybe at least a little?? and like. they are now the only people who share in this wreckage of a shared childhood. and we know they both hold grudges. they'd scream 'you killed lily' at each other immediately...but also like they love insulting people...if they lived in different circumstances they might have been friends....
also. for all of the grudges around James and love and guilt with Lily...Snape was definitely seeing petunia in Harry. she is the one that raised him. and Petunia was clearly thinking of Snape a lot too, he's still her first conduit to wizarding knowledge. she was soooo relieved he didn't show up with the Hogwarts letter.
