(i have only watched the anime so my knowledge is limited to their arcs in that)
maka:
i think she’d have the tinkatink line. it’s based on your classic “small girl, big weapon” trope, and it’s fairy-steel, which is a PHENOMENAL typing with lots of resistances and only two weaknesses. it has great stats, and it’s a fierce pokémon that delights in battling and growing stronger. tinkatuff also resembles her aesthetically, with the spiky scythe-looking blade coming out of its hammer and the pigtails to boot.
she’d have tinkatuff at the start of the series, and i think chronically her tinkatuff would evolve into tinkaton around the time she managed her first genie hunter.
i also considered absol for her, because of the scythe on its head and how well it resembles soul just in appearance—her partner pokémon resembling her partner weapon would be so adorable. i also factored in her manga wings @pepper-m00n told me about, which would match the mega evolution and would be a cool reflection of that ability. ultimately, though, i don’t think the pokémon as a whole is as much of a match to her personality as tinkaton is. if i made whole teams, however, it would likely be her second pokémon.
regarding pokémon that would be their partners (and why)

i think he’d have the garchomp line. i think aesthetically they look a lot alike—with soul wearing similar reoccurring colors (yellow, red, blue), their matching teeth, their spikes, and the wings looking like scythes.
and in the mega form, garchomp’s wings ACTUALLY melt into scythes—so hey, scythe arm buddies!
it’s a dragon-ground type, and a pseudo-legendary, reflecting soul’s strength; and it would make a great duo with maka’s tinkaton, because they could cover each other’s weaknesses. power couple.
it’s also a fast-moving pokemon meant to resemble a jet plane, and while motorcycles and jet planes are not the same, they’re both fast moving transportation, right? while it can’t learn fly in the games (to my knowledge), its dex entries indicate that it CAN fly, so…it would be a cool replacement for a motorcycle if need be.
he’d start with a gabite that would evolve into garchomp during their first fight with crona. it would be a very hard battle that would actually knock soul out, and in its desperation to protect its trainer, gabite becomes a garchomp!
garchomp is a ferocious pokémon, with the power to mega evolve; it would also be interesting to explore the new power garchomp has in a similar fashion to the little demon arc.
i feel like garchomp would go through mega evolution for the first time when they have their first battle with free and maka accomplishes the witch hunter move.
