Buried Hearts
Villain’s head rested on their chin as they looked over at Civilian. They were twirling the ribbon that had come undone from their hair, eyes focused on the book they were reading and being completely oblivious to the flutters in Villain’s stomach.
They would never know, of course, about how deeply the villain admired them. How they admired the curve of their brows, the graceful arch of their neck. Their soft lips and the eager words that came out of them. Villain had found beauty in Civilian’s flaws, and couldn’t resist finding home in their person.
But they would never tell Civilian that.
They couldn’t.
Because if they did, Villain would lose their only comfort, their only calm in the storm. They weren’t so dense as to be in denial of the unmistakable rejection that would follow. And though they weren’t a fool, they were a coward.
They didn’t want to see the emotion in Civilian’s eyes, their pitiful tone as they would say that they couldn’t keep meeting anymore.
Villain learnt over the past few months that even though they could live without Civilian, they didn’t want to.
Villain had gotten used to (and dare they say even care about) Civilian with their unwavering determination and their passionate ramblings which often got them distracted during their debates. They didn’t know how or when but slowly Civilian became a more and more frequent thought in their mind. They had stolen a place in Villain’s heart, one which they thought was nonexistent and had made them feel things, things they were pretty sure Civilian didn’t reciprocate.
So they would wait.
They would wait until the feelings died down (which they weren’t sure they would), until they were brave enough to look at Civilian without the butterflies and euphoria erupting in their stomach. And then they could go back to normal, with Civilian going about with their life, becoming the greatest architect they dreamed to be and Villain living with their demons. Exactly how fate destined them to be.
But, Villain thought as their heart squeezed with Civilian’s soft smile, until then, they would let themselves indulge in a little bit of the love that was spreading through their heart.
Just until they couldn’t.
