Chatting with one of my favorite Japanese Eruri fanartists on twitter and they actually do not know anything about ch84 yet. The magazine comes out tomorrow and they’ve not read online spoilers and I feel so sorry for them. I am SO SORRY...

On SnK chapter 84

I was chatting with a friend earlier in the day and she asked me what I honestly thought of the latest chapter. I’ve held off with my critique until I am sure I would want to say it after I have calmed down. Well, the emotions have settled down but I find my view to remain the same. Basically this:

We will never know the true extent of the influence of Isayama’s editors on the story, but comparing the most recent chapters leading up to ch84 and the previous ones, I would say that editorial interference was very heavy in the most recent chapters and it did not do the story any favors. Reading the events that led up to ch84, something was clearly off with Isayama’s style, it’s as though somebody else had taken over the narrative. The heavy handed drama and sentimentality on display from ch80-84 were too much even for him, fond as he is of these devices. The effect became too cloying, the story was stretched out and milked for every drop of drama it was worth which cheapened the entire narrative. Waiting for and reading the chapters month after month left one burdened and wearied. I did not enjoy the experience at all.

What I liked about Isayama’s realism in previous chapters was that, while it was brutal and unsparing, it was also quite clean-cut and logical. In ch84, his realism and logic fled entirely when he made Levi choose Armin over Erwin for the serum. In fact the entire Erwin-Armin conflict was very poorly developed and not well thought out, with drama hinging on an issue which was no issue at all, if one were following standard military protocol. This was what I meant in my previous post when I said Isayama’s storyline suddenly became blunt when it’s normally so sharp and cutting, and oftentimes quite clever. While I can understand Isayama’s thought processes for Levi that led to his decision not to inject Erwin, it was too heavily sentimental, and not something a trained soldier will resort to when making decisions in the battlefield. A Commander is too important to be sacrificed without good reason, and Isayama’s reason simply does not cut it. It’s like throwing common sense out the window. It would have been more effective (and logical) for Levi to choose Erwin over Armin despite everything, not to mention it would have a far greater impact on the story. I know Isayama to be better than this, but I suspect the editorial pressure to put the shonen first became too much even for him. That’s the price one pays when publishing one’s story in a shonen mag.
