Attack on Titan Hita - Part 1

I take no credit for the name of this serie of posts, as that's the actual name for the AoT promotion campaign of the town: Shingeki no Hita (進撃の日田). Everywhere you turn to there's a poster, a banner, a cut-out of our beloved characters. Even before leaving the train platform, Eren protests that there has to be more than onsen to the town, and in the station hall the veterans welcome you to town.

Outside there are banners where the characterss say "welcome" in a number of languages. There's also the Levi statue, of course, in all its glory. No words, only love.

There is currently a special AoT "fest" going on so IDK if it's always like this, but everywhere you go you see posters, banners or cut-outs of the characters.

In the old town you even have traditional paper lanterns in some shops

The sheer amount and variety of AoT themed merch is overwhelming. Not just your typical shit like clear files, T-shirts, keychains, acrylic stands and the like; many local producers slap an AoT label on their stuff, so you not only have AoT coffee cup sleeves at the SnK café, but you can also buy AoT shampoo, snacks, the infamous eruri beer cans, or... tea liquor?

Since we had originally planned to move around in public transport only, and, being the countryside, buses are few and far between, we decided to stay 2 nights in town and, although in the end we ended up booking the taxi shuttle service, I'm glad we took the extra time.

We stayed at Socia Hotel which is like the "official" AoT hotel. The place is outdated af (no usb ports anywhere and the decor is from the 80s) but spotless, good breakfast, public bath with panoramic views, and the staff are super nice. They do offer an AoT-themed room, but we didn't take it because a) it cost twice as much as a normal room (maybe not an issue for visitors from the US, where lodging is ridiculously expensive at least the last times I was there) and b) I wasn't wild about the merch included in the upgrade (some of which they also sell,though I didn't buy any). In the lobby there are 2 display cases with an incredible collection of AoT merchandise, as well as 3 original drawings by Isayama.

The AoT dedicated exhibition spaces are 4, or 2 and 2 halfs: The Museum and the Museum Annex are a must; then you have the EMA statue at Oyama dam, and the newest space is the camphor tree they planted in a nearby hill to mimic the tree on the hill where Mikasa wasted her life mourning the rotting head of Ereh EMA used to run to as kids. We didn't go to that last one.
