"Be ON!"
"Espasyo Launching"
The first thing that you might come up with when you hear the word
“espasyo”
could probably be space. And as this newly found organization called
“ESPASYO”
emerges from nowhere, they bring space to everyone, but what for? Last September 7 in Rose Garden at Burnham Park, Baguio City, they have conducted the official launch of their group. It was one of those days when you would already notice that there was going to be a big event. And as a newbie, in Baguio, I was fascinated by the variety of people present during the morning. Tourists were taking
selfies e
verywhere and capturing moments together, as joggers jog around the park. There were also a lot of dogs with their owners, and it’s really nice seeing everyone connect with not only themselves but with also the animals. And as you walk deeper into the center of Rose Garden, you’ll meet the people in charge of the program. Also, from there, you’ll notice the number of emerging artists with their materials on each set. As the team moved and started setting their cameras and lenses at place, the event started with a cultural performance from San Vicente National High School who showed how the local ancestors of Baguio performed their ceremonies. And how amazing were the children wearing
only
‘bahags’
and
‘sarros’
during the performance. It wasn’t really awkward watching them even if you’d see butt cheeks popping at their behinds, but it was something you’d adore because of their culture. It was then followed by the amazing exhibition of Maximum Parkour, where they did dangerous stunts by tumbling, jumping and flipping into the fin air. It was really intense, you’d already feel it with the screams and
‘oohs’
and
‘ahhs’
of the audience. There was also intermission numbers from the various dance groups all over Baguio including our very own TNA Agito Dance Group who shared their skills with not only with their flexible and suave moves but with finesse. Everyone was delighted by the amazing aura given by their performers, and not to mention there was also a theatrical play performed that showed both political and social reality, which was performed by TNA Ars Theatrica, and a poem reading with the melody of percussion instruments playing in the background. Watching every performance made me realize my desire to join them or at least share my talent to everyone with every step, move or gesture I make. And in addition to that there was also an eco-bag designing competition led by the Ecolodians.
I have never thought that the people of Baguio could be so alive despite of the rain. Yes, the event still continued even if we were getting wet – as one of the audience said “
Huwag nang pansinin yung ulan, ang importante masaya,” (Don’t mind the rain; what’s important is we’re having fun).
And if you only knew what prayers the team and I made for the rain to stop as the programs went on. Luckily, the rain did not became heavy as a fashion walk started, where fabulous models even cosplayers showed off their beauty to everyone. But the launch didn’t end with that as Espasyo released another breath taking performance from Maximum Parkour. And as rain finally sprayed from the clouds, the rock ‘n roll music of the bands started. It was such an exciting event where even when we were getting wet, they were still rockin’ the event. Everyone was dancing, and you won’t even believe how energetic the organizers were. They were actually pulling our team to dance and jump with them with the band in front of the stage – and it was really a fun experience, we disregarded the rain even if our socks got wet.
But still, curiosity led the team and I to exploring more to what this organization wants the people of Baguio to know. Is
it just to show off what they can do? Or is it for everyone? Then, it was when Sir Jake Espiritu “Kuya Jake”(co-founder) said that one of the major aims of Espasyo is to give “space” to every artist in Baguio no matter how old or young you are. From painters to sculptors, visual artists to graphic designers, dancers to instrument players and singers to actors – you are all invited to occupy space. It is for everyone to express and to give them a voice in the society. Space for those people who could not maximize their potential. And a space at the hearts of people for them to be placed.
