still astonished that there are people interested in my silly little au
the future.
I do have further arcs planned. In fact, I have most of the story figured out, up until the millennium demon arc and a little bit going into faudo.
It’s quite interesting, I think. I think all four main characters develop quite a bit in the end, but zeon & dufaux, unsurprisingly, end up changing the most from the source material. I don’t want to spoil too much, but at the same time... I’m obviously not going to redraw the entire series. It’s unlikely that I’d get too far in the first place.
So I’ll share a few notes.
Dufaux gets an arc where he confronts his abusers.
Zeon gets a signed autograph from ooumi megumi. (he doesn’t want it)
Rops survives to see the millennium demons arc.
Gash eats a bear.
Umagon is still called umagon, Yes, gash still has his memories.
Zeon gets the kolulu flashbacks. They won’t leave him alone. They haunt him.
There are a few chapters I’m really excited to do, but whether or not I’ll manage to get that far is a question I can’t answer. I’ll definitely be playing around with this concept for awhile, and I’ll see where things go from there.
dialogues.
There were a number of things I changed regarding the dialogue. And by a “number of things,” I mean that the script is completely different.
Obviously, with zeon’s introduction, there had to be a number of changes. I originally wanted to keep the dialogue for the first few pages kinda the same, but uhhhhh-
The original was just really melodramatic. I love how over the top it is.
I did end up trying to tone things down a bit though. Partly because I think it’s buckwild how quickly his mother started yelling and crying.z It also just didn’t sit right with me that she was essentially telling her 14 year old that it was his fault he was getting bullied. Like ma’am, come on.
In a similar fashion, I wanted Kiyomaro to express his discontent a bit more. He’s clearly depressed. In the second chapter of the original series, it becomes clear that he just feels ostracized because of his big fat anime brain.
out of bounds.
There was also one panel of zeon where he was blurry. I did have the drawing fully rendered because I love making extra work for myself.
Disappointingly, this ended up being one of my favorite drawings of him. Alas, the world was never meant to view him in a somewhat pleasant looking depiction. Look at him. He’s a baby. Infant !
There are a few other moments like this, in which I draw more than is necessary. I feel like I’m posting out of bounds secrets, like in video games. Y’know where you hack through the camera and you see things that game devs hid off screen?
Well here’s another one. Dufaux actually had his whole ass face, but it was cut off by the panel sizes.
And here’s a version of gash without the frost. Honestly, this last panel ended up being my favorite in the project.
He deserves his ghibli tears. He cries so much, damn.
sourcing.
When I first started, I actually wanted to make the comic as close to the original manga as possible. But.. given that zeon’s introduction would be ridiculously different from gash’s, that couldn’t really pan out.
I still had fun mirroring some of the original panels though, and I wanted to share the comparisons.
I’ll probably discuss some of the dialogue changes I’ve made later on, too.
I also think it’s hilarious how quickly kiyo jumps to punching a toddler.
When I first started working on the project, I wasn’t really sure of what style I wanted to paint in (or how to even draw kiyomaro.) Since this was one of the first pages, it was one that inevitably saw a lot of the changes.
Here’s the current version vs the first version vs the original.
What would Zeon's reaction be to meeting Brago when he and Sherry show up at Kiyomaro's house? I don't remember if they say in the manga if they know of each other's existence, but I think that Zeon as the prince must know Brago's fame or vice versa
hiiii this was so long ago sorry. brago actually doesn't meet zeon for a very long time. in the canon, brago and sherry were going around specifically picking off weaker demons, since sherry wanted to end the battle royale quickly.
brago and sherry go after gash in europe. zeon and brago are definitely aware of each other though. i feel like a lot of the more powerful demons leave each other alone for the first few months, until they can recall enough powerful spells to go after each other.
in my head, zeon and brago would consider it a waste to finish each other off without having an epic battle with powerful spells. like, where's the fun in that?
side note- i like to think that zeon and brago become weird friends post-demon battle. their friendship involves beating each other up, respectfully.
I find it most interesting that Gash isnt amnesiac this time. Will his travels with Dufaux be driven by his search for his brother?? since thats what he was originally looking forward to by being in the king tournament. And how will their first meeting go :U
this is probably super late because I haven't been on tumblr for ages sorrrrryyy but I was planning on tweaking a whole lot of details and reframing a lot of the arcs. in this au, the first thing dufaux does is make gash come with him in a vengeance quest. in classic kng fashion, gash does a heartfelt but kinda cliche speech and convinces dufaux not to commit first degree murder (unfortunate)
meanwhile in japan, kiyomaro and zeon encounter tio and megumi. tio almost gets her ass beat by almost mistaking zeon for gash, but luckily, mars opens his mouth first so he gets his ass beat out of the human world. kiyomaro and megumi become friends. zeon and tio do not.
afterwards, tio and megumi go to europe for their photoshoot. (in the canon, this was a throwaway comment where tio talks about seeing 'a guy who looks like gash!' for the first time.) in europe, tio meets gash and dufaux and they actually come along for the baltro arc.
anyways, tio tells gash about zeon's atrocious vibes. combined with dufaux' hesitation (answer-talker,) gash is persuaded to not go to japan just yet. or something.
the first time gash and zeon meet is actually in the millennium demon arc. it goes badly.
ah ! not sure if i’ve mentioned before, but this blog is dedicated just to the bookswap au, but I’ve actually drawn a lot of general zatch bell / kng stuff. i don’t really post on tumblr outside of this blog, but if you’re interested in my work, you can see everything on my art twitter !
