“I don’t want your bachelor pad,” Dennis said suddenly, fixing Robby with a very serious look. “I’ll house-sit, fine. But I’m not keeping it. It’s yours for when you come back.”
Robby suddenly broke eye contact and Dennis wanted to throw himself off the building.
“If you don’t come back, I’m done,” Dennis continued, words out before he even knew what he was saying. “I quit medicine.”
Robby looked up sharply. “You don’t mean-”
“I do.” Dennis stepped forward before he could lose his nerve. The words came out steady, frighteningly steady, even to his own ears. “And it will be entirely your fault.”
The silence that followed was immediate and heavy. About half a second later, Dennis realised he might have just said something spectacularly unhelpful to a man who was already on the brink.
Then again, Dennis figured desperate times called for desperate measures.
~ Probably my favorite part of this series. I need a new chapter, STAT!!
