ROTK Book 1 Ch 10: "The Black Gate Opens" ⛩️👄

Another fairly emo ch, huge stakes 😱😭 here we go!! I appreciate any reading/comments esp considering the length of these posts, as I always say! 👄⛩️

Merry breaking my heart again; he still feels like he hasn't done enough 💔 "The last glint of the morning sun on spear and helm twinkled and was lost, and still he remained with bowed head and heavy heart, feeling friendless and alone. Everyone that he cared for had gone away into the gloom that hung over the distant eastern sky; and little hope at all was left in his heart that he would ever see any of them again." 😭😭😭

The personification of the land!! "Tree and stone, blade and leaf were listening. The darkness had been dispelled, and far away westward sunset was on the Value of the Anduin, and the white peaks of the mountains blushed in the blue air; but a shadow and a gloom brooded upon the Ephel Dúath." ("Blushed in the blue air" 😍😍😍); "...the air of the valley was heavy with fear and enmity." It builds atmosphere, one of the calm before the storm...the uncertainty of what's ahead, but whatever it is seems chilling 😱😱😱.

Ahahaha I love Imrahil..."say it man, say it, you the King!!" 😅 If their goal is to goad the Enemy to cause a diversion so that Frodo can succeed, that does seem more goading, as Imrahil seems to imply 😅

Aragorn seeing the fear in the soldiers and feeling pity 🥺 "to them Mordor had been from childhood a name of evil, and yet unreal, a legend that had no part in their simple life; and now they walked like men in a hideous dream come true, and they understood not this war nor why fate should lead them to such a pass." ...just...ugggh 😩 The experience of so many soldiers heading into war, I have to imagine (never served myself, to be clear!). Beautifully captured here....heartbreaking.

More of that calm before the storm, pg 163, also the sense of the servants of Sauron having overtaken the land, even corrupted it: "All was silent but watchful...they knew that all the hills and rocks about the Morannon were filled with hidden foes, and the shadowy defile beyond was bored and tunnelled by broods of evil things." ...and the Nazgûl are also flying right over. 😱😱😱

The Mouth of Sauron....oh my Eruuuu Hollywood could never: "in the sockets of its eyes and in its nostrils there burned a flame." (maybe a reach, but there I think about the fire of mechanization, very much associated with Sauron and Saruman). His backstory: he was a Black Númenorean, part of a cult of Sauron, essentially, feels like. Learned a lot from Sauron, was cunning enough to make Sauron like him, and came to know his mind. "He was more cruel than any orc...", sounds like it 😩 Hints at his ambition later on as well, gunning to run reclaimed Isengard and Mordor's hold over the West. Ooooof.

But also, omg what a snowflake...Aragorn literally just stares him down and he whines "I am a herald and an ambassador, and may not be assailed!"...throughout the conversation seems so easily offended, moody, and cantankerous. So emotional 😅 The language is also just so debased and insulting: "dwarf-coat, elf-cloak, blade of the downfallen West, and spy from the little rat land of the Shire" (oh my gloves are off 😤😤😤😤). All underscores the shaky personal foundation of the Enemy...mental, spiritual rot.

Pippin not being able to help running forward with a cry when Frodo's things are revealed 😭 "Silence!" Gandalf tells him, but it's pretty clear he feels similarly (of course, he adores Frodo). "Name your terms": perhaps the only thing in the moment that has him considering the Enemy's will enough to listen to that. In any case, the Mouth can see that they are shaken by the evidence of Frodo's capture...of course they are, of course it's evident.

The "terms", imo, underscore what is at stake, what the whole fight has been for. There is the loss of land, but imo what feels much worse: "pay tributary to Mordor"...okkk that could mean many things, many of them quite bad. My leading theory: high high hiiigh tithes/taxes and related forms of exploitation...and if they can "bear no arms", they can never have a chance of fighting back against it. While, with accumulating more and more resources, Mordor makes and stores more and more dangerous, powerful weapons and machinery. Underscores a pet lore belief // thing I'll shout from the rooftops: there is a strooong anti- materialistic strain in the lore, that which is under recognized and underdiscussed 🗣️🗣️🗣️

Gandalf, this is why we love him ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥 "these we will take in memory of our friend...but as for your terms, we reject them utterly. Get you gone, for your embassy is over and death is best to you. We did not come here to waste words in treating with Sauron, faithless and accursed; still less with one of his slaves. Begone!" ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥 I wonder if the Mouth just fired him up enough that he was like let's gooo...deaaaath, Éomer nihilistic vibes (yeaaah their chances in battle do not look great 😅).

The imagery of the assembling forces as those of the Enemy close in!! "There fair and desperate was raised the banner of the Trees and the Stars" (ummm Estel!!), "the banners of Rohan and Dol Amroth, White Horse and Silver Swan"...natural imagery yisss, I mean this is Tolkien 😅.

Ugggh the rising red choking out sun: imagery signaling at least not amdir present 😅 "as if it were the ending of the day, or the end maybe of all the world of light"...😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨. And then we get smaller (pun intended? you decide hehe) and more personal by going into Pippin's POV. He saves Beregond from the troll!! AND Faramir...protecting men he honors, his heroes and friends 💙 and then he is crushed and thinks it's the end: "This is my tale. It is ended now. Goodbye!"...😭😭. All the more powerful in its simplicity. BUT THE EAGLES 🦅🦅🦅 No, Pippin, they're in your story too. And it's not over 🥲💙

Just going to point out:

He is wearing a long white suit jacket, with the coloured sleeve ends. Under that appears to be a blouse with a different coloured collar, but which ends up looking like a layer on top of the blouse. He also wears pants that match the accent colour of his jacket. And he wears a black hat with a red ribbon around it, and a red bow.

Now who does this remind me of?

Reminder that Ah Duo is okay with Jinshi being bi.

The two guards who had come in trying to restrain Ah-Duo covered their eyes with their hands and peeked out between their fingers.

As for Ah-Duo, her eyes went wide and her mouth dropped open.

“Ah!” she said.

“That’s right. You don’t have to choose a flower. I guess I was mistaken.”

With that she backed out of the room and politely shut the door.
