One time in high school, while working at my usual summer job at the dairy company, I got sent to a crew I had never worked with before. These guys were older than me and in college.
I was really awkward and withdrawn at the time, and I remember really admiring them because, well they were college guys, but also they were really friendly and outspoken.
At one point we went on break. They were animatedly conversing while I watched silently, when suddenly one of them turned in my direction and asked, "Hey, how come you don't talk much?"
He wasn't being confrontational. His tone suggested he was just being curious. In my head, I knew what to say. My brain crafted a sentence that would convey I wasn't trying to be stand offish, I just thought they were cool and enjoyed listening. But, as has often been the case in my life, there was a fuck up between my brain and my mouth. What I said was,
"I DON'T FEEL LIKE TALKING."
That pretty much ended any further conversation.
