Life changed for you because you decided to leave. And you don’t regret that choice. You left it all behind because frankly you weren’t down for the demon shit, although distantly you were involved due to your relation to Luisa and Grandma Elizabeth (your grandfather and her were siblings) it was in your blood to be somehow. You found ways to block out the urges whenever they tried to worm their way through.
There were herbs and rituals to get them to stop but there was still a pull to not only Luisa but Sofiane as well. You didn’t want to be saved and you were not one to ask for help so it was to your surprise to find a truck pulling up to your seclusion. There you sat in your ethereal glory seated in the grass with the lake behind you and the orange sky swirled along the horizon.
You knew before you saw them. The pull simmered down as you shakily got to your feet just as they climbed out of the car. Sofiane was in the driver’s seat with Luisa on the passenger side, the back door opened too revealing victor. You stayed put as Luisa was the first to run to you, almost knocking you off your feet. She was shaking against your frame and you could hear her soft cries. She didn’t want to look at you because she knew you weren’t yourself.
They all knew they were too late. Nothing could be done and it was your fault. There was nothing you could say to ease her pain but the longer she held onto you, it seemed to give her some comfort. You rested a veiny hand against the back of her braids and shushed her while keeping your eyes locked on the two by the car.
You could feel the heat radiating from Sofiane as he flicked a cigarette to the ground. Victor on the other hand seemed unsure, which was understandable. Luisa stepped back from you but kept her gaze downwards as Sofiane stalked over to you.
“What the fuck, y/n?!”
You expected this.
“Hello to you too, Sof.”
He rolled his eyes, pulling his chin away from you for a moment before meeting your face again. His eyes scanned over your features, those dark veins were peeking out from the top half of your clothing covering your collarbones, and most likely your shoulder blade. Those veins were too familiar except one eye was now bloodshot even to the pupil.
“I’m glad you’re all here, believe it or not.” You stated, “I originally wanted to be buried and just wait it out but something told me to wait for the better.”
“This is better to you?! You’re choosing death because you were too selfish to ask me—US for help. What’s wrong with you?!” Sofiane yelled.
You glanced at Luisa who now had shaky breaths, You also noticed victor eventually made his way over, reaching out to Sofiane who shrugged his hand away from his shoulder.
“It’s the way it has to be for the three of you.” You slightly turned your body back to the horizon, you watched as the edges illuminated brighter which means time was almost up.
“Can’t there be a different method to this?” Victor spoke for the first time.
A small smile graced your lips, “we all made a deal in this lifetime so when the outcome might be the odds we must deal with it in our own way.”
“I don’t like this, y/n.” Luisa sobbed, “we’re family, you could have came back to us. We could have helped.”
“I’m helping you three even if you don’t see it right now, but you will someday.” You reached out for your dear cousin’s hand and gave it a light squeeze.
Victor and Sofiane glanced at your intertwined hands and then back at each other. You turned to Victor reaching for his hand as Luisa leaned into his side and with his sweaty one he squeezed it too. Lastly you turned to Sofiane who huffed and you dipped your head in understanding before taking a large inhale and made your move.
Each step away from them was hard. Luisa and Victor felt nothing but their heartbeats thudding in their ears and Sofiane felt like his was being forced to stop beating. He jogged after you and reached for your wrist turning you to face him. You instantly cupped his face as he peered into your eyes trying to alter what you were trying to do. The four of you were present so this could work.
They thought they were smarter as Luisa silently mumbled some chants and victor struggled to read your mind. It wasn’t until Sofiane caught you—well another version of you from his peripheral stepping fully into the lake. Rapidly he glanced back at what he thought was you in front of him until you vanished. He ran to the lake screaming with Victor and Luisa calling out to him.
The last image of you was your hair floating upwards before completely going under, it was only seconds after the bubbles rose that the lake shifted from green to black and red. Sofiane’s legs couldn’t pull him fast enough as a explosion erupted from the lake, sending him flying back to Luisa and victor.
The teens have seen many things these past few months and this could be added to the list. When Sofiane lifted his head from his arm he looked over at the lake to see that the red water rose above where the water once sat. Through the water sat the orange horizon that almost bled beneath, pulling the water to its grasp. The three teens squinted hard enough to see a silhouette, your silhouette floating but just as they had seen it you vanished.
“Move!” Victor yelled reaching to pull Sofiane back.
Luisa’s lips trembled as they all watch the water drop from the horizon and back to its original place. However it did not stay there long enough for the trio to search it as the water quickly sunk to who knows where.
A lake no longer sat in the middle of the field, it was no more just like you.
“Y/N!” Sofiane screamed as he fell backwards once again with victor and Luisa coming to his aide.
He was triggered as his screams for you to come back were unanswered. There was so much he needed to say but couldn’t and just like that…you were gone. Sofiane couldn’t believe you thought this would be the end, it wouldn’t be…no matter what sides you stood on.
Sofiane was going to do everything he could this time despite him feeling that he couldn’t due to his current pain.
He did it before for his brother and he would be damned if he didn’t try for you too.
