In 1989, playwright, actor, and activist Safdar Hashmi was fatally attacked by political thugs while performing a street play outside of Delhi. His death led to the founding of Sahmat.
These incredible photos of Safdar Hashmi are from a video segment on the beginnings of SAHMAT (Safdar Hashmi Memorial Trust) as part of Fowler Museum’s 2015 exhibition The Sahmat Collective: Art and Activism in India since 1989. You can see him alongside fellow theatre activist Moloyashree Hashmi (his wife), filmmaker/historian Sohail Hashmi (his brother), and Hindi playwright/writer Bhisham Sahni as well as in action performing plays with his leftist street theatre group Jana Natya Manch (JANAM).
