DBKL steps up checks on soil movement along slopes

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 8, 2014:

Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) is increasing its monitoring and surveillance on slopes following the current monsoon season.

Deputy director-general (Project Implementation & Maintenance) Datuk Mohd Najib Mohd said this was to detect any abnormal soil movement which could result in landslides.

“Should we detect any abnormal soil movement in sloping areas, restoration work will be done to strengthen the soil structure. This is to prevent landslides from occurring,” he said when contacted by Bernama here today.

Besides physical inspection, he said a real-time monitoring inspection was also supported by the DBKL Geographical Information System (GIS), which provides a three-dimensional digital map on any natural structure.

The DBKL GIS, launched last June, monitored and identified the state of slopes which were sensitive and at risk of landslides.

The information generated would be relayed to the DBKL operations room for analysis, Mohd Najib said.

Peninsular Malaysia is currently experiencing an inter-monsoon which will move into the northeast monsoon by mid-month.

The Meteorological Department forecasts the country will experience more rain during this period, which is expected to continue until March next year.

Continuous heavy rain would create a risk for flooding in low-lying areas and landslides, a spokesman from the Meteorological Department said when contacted.

Meanwhile, SlopeWatch Programme director Eriko Motoyama said the group was also active in monitoring slopes in Bukit Antarabangsa for signs of risk of landslides.

SlopeWatch is a community group set up by residents of Bukit Antarabangsa to monitor slope activities and carry out maintenance work on problematic hillslopes.

“We are carrying out continuous awareness programmes whereby we equip locals with knowledge on the health of slopes in their area.

“This includes basic information on how to identify danger signs on slopes.”
