I know I’m stating the obvious, but in a decent world, The Devil Wears Prada 2 would feature a steamy lesbian sex scene, and the idea of a romantic subplot involving a bland guy who sticks out like a sore thumb would be laughable. I finished reading Blue Proustian Moment today. As I read the manga, I could feel the taste of summer and citrus on the tip of my tongue, and I smiled from start to finish. The way it addressed issues like gentrification and classism was a bit simplistic and could have been explored in more depth, but it still managed to get the message across very well. The setting and characters are full of life. It’s a pleasure to follow the blossoming of the protagonists’ relationship and how they’ve changed. And to complement the dynamic, the manga’s humor was spot-on. The comical situations really remind me of everyday life, and that made me laugh even more. I wish there were more chapters so I could learn more about how Moka’s life unfolded away from Kazuki, but even so, it was a satisfying and sweet ending, just like their reunion.
“Ten years from now, we’ll be together, laughing and drinking tea” and "Someday, together, we'll shine." are phrases that have significantly shaped the way I view relationships. Love is truly wanting to have someone be a part of your future. These girls are so embedded in a system where the idea of being together isn't even a possibility, so all they can convey is that they long for a “someday”—that, even in a future they can't fathom, they want to remain a constant in each other's lives.
About Utako and Akira
The thing is, their relationship isn't even messy—it's somehow cozy. The anguish that permeates everything around them stems from the mundane: lives are too different to ever truly align, leaving them in a cycle of dissatisfaction and mutual desires that never quite come together
The closing panels are my favorite part. When their pent-up emotions reach a breaking point, spill beyond their bodies and affect their surrondings in a very direct way, forcing them to finally confront them... it was both of their hands that slipped and broke that glass.
I rewatched In The Mood for Love with my girlfriend yesterday, and once again savored every nuance of the intricately drawn inner worlds of the characters that director Wong Kar-wai captured so subtly. I’m always drawn to stories of lonely souls finding each other—stories brimming with the raw power of an intense yet unfulfilled desire that shakes the very core of those who feel it and leaves a lasting imprint, even as time marches relentlessly on.
Ever since I first saw this film a year ago, I have held the story of Chow and Su close to my heart, and I was overjoyed to revisit it with my beloved.

As I've stated before, I strongly associate my girlfriend and I with Akira and Utako from My Female Friend Comes Every Now and Then by Sumiko Arai. Akira is attached to a routine that has remained unchanged for years, while Utako is a free spirit who travels constantly in search of new experiences. They find each other in an odd way, yet quickly grow close.
Utako returns home to Akira between her travels, and they care for each other equally, easing each other's worries and finding comfort together unlike anywhere else.
I see Akira and Utako as resembling me and my beloved in many ways, though with our roles partially reversed. My girlfriend is the one who is always traveling while I remain settled in the same place, yet I share that same free spirit and a desire to live more freely. She has inspired me greatly in that regard. More than anything, what resonates with me is the nature of their bond. They are more than friends or lovers, what they have transcends any label, and they yearn for each other endlessly. Just like me and her.
