Album reviews 1/25/18

So I started using this website called Deezer. It’s just for streaming, so I’m only going to listen to stuff until my free trial runs out, but hey, it’s a way to get through this list of bands to look for albums by that I’ve been running since forever. Deezer even has stuff I’m looking for!

(This was totally not a paid advertisement, but I will so take money for it, just sayin’.)

Solar Quest- Orgship: These guys I know from the song "Acid Air Raid" which is, y'know, acid. And this is distinctly not. It's low-key, downtempo ambient chillout, but even compared to other songs in that genre, it's dullsville. I'm starting to think maybe my copy of Acid Air Raid was mistagged! 4/10

Storm- Stormjunkie: This is a side project by the group better known as Jam & Spoon, that I found through the song "Time to Burn". That's a fun track, but the rest of this is pretty darned disappointing. That song just is not representative of this album in the least. Anemic beats and uninteresting synths make me wonder if I wouldn't have liked this better a decade and a half ago. 4.5/10

Submarine- Skin Diving: Now this is more like it, for all that I have no idea if this is even the right band called Submarine. I know them from a remix of the song "Sunbeam", which... well, having heard the original, I'll just say Deepsky has a way with chopping up music and making it new again. But they've got a very late 90's chill groove sound, akin to Everything but the Girl or the Cardigans. Tracks you'll want to check out to make a decision include "Evergreen", "4 AM" and "The Girl Who Fell to Earth". This quite the blast from the past! 8.5/10

Three Dog Night- It's a Jungle: This is just a 5-song EP released in 1983, but I'm mentioning it because... Geez, this is Three Dog Night, but they sound so fucking 80's it hurts. This is some Hall & Oates meets Genesis shit. It's surreal.

Tilt- Explorer: I forget what song introduced me to these guys. I probably don't still have it. This is some pretty good trance, old or not! It does get a little sparse in places, like the minimalist "Tokyo Breaks", but tracks like "The World Doesn't Know" and "Explorer" bring life to it. Not a bad listen for electronica fans. 6.5/10
