BRIGHT COLOR OUT OF SPACE
2102, December 3
The recent spell of solar flares has gone largely unnoticed to most of us, leaving engineers scratching their heads as they try to come up with better ways to protect orbiting satellites from the unpredictable space weather. However, the sun's latest display was difficult to miss. Yesterday at 12:14 GMT the sky lit up even to the naked eye as a super flare created a massive gust of solar wind. As solar wind collides with earth's magnetic field a multicoloured spectacle known as Aurorae lights cover the sky and is a common sight near the magnetic poles. For this event Aurorae have been recorded as far south as Tokyo, Oklahoma City, and Gibraltar, and it is still going strong. According to Dr Delgree at the ESA more stormy weather is expected in the near future and it could come at a high price. "We have become very good at protecting our satellites and most of the time it's not an issue. But there is only so much we can do. There is a risk that one day we'll face a solar wind so powerful that it will break through. At that point it would be like a levee breaking and most likely our entire network of satellites would stop working." This network has an estimated value of 167 trillion CM, but Dr Delgree notes that the sudden stop of data traffic could seriously shock our society and could come to cause more harm than the initial value of the lost technology. As any other catastrophic scenario, most governments have emergency plans, but for people caught in already stressed situations like the Jharkand DMZ or the current North American crisis it could prove absolutely devastating. Dr Delgree admits there isn't much to be done about our dependency on satellites unless we either invent something that would make the technology obsolete or we go back to covering the globe in cables. Until then we simply have to hope the sun keeps its tantrums to a minimum.
COOL AIR FESTIVAL
2102, December 3
The week long peace festival in Hanover started off with a bang yesterday as popular music duo Sepia Altyd took the stage. The CA Festival is an annual venue promoting world peace and human rights going back to 2082 and the end of the Gobi conflict. This year the focus is on North America and their long-winded war. Global Peace Effort's spokeswoman Hayat Nasr is pleased to see so many visitors. "It's so easy to look away from all the suffering in the world. It's great to see so many come out and show their support for the people in the Americas." The fifth serious attempt at a ceasefire was technically a success as all six parties signed the treaty last month, but so far the fighting continues. Nasr explains: "The situation is very complicated. Even though the governing politicians say they will stop the war, separatists will continue to fuel conflict for a long time. It has become so divided, so many parties fighting. Stabilizing the U.S. has become impossible." Nasr ensures that GPE takes no political sides and that it is about providing humanitarian aid to the people. "It's all about limiting human suffering. As a part of the human species, we need to help our brothers and sisters. It is our duty." The festival will go on for the rest of the week and include artists such as Dark Jesters, Polaris, and Shountai. If you happen to be in Hanover the admittance is free.
