zoey went to burbank high school which is home to many notable Hollywood alumni and only fostered her desire to pursue music more
while being a lyricist had been her top dream she had also explored script writing with the idea of becoming a director so her notebooks aren’t just filled with lyrics but also ideas for movies and shows
her parents (both of them despite being divorced and usually choosing to agree to the opposite of the other) never really approved of the career choice and often shot down her ideas and suggestions causing her to shy away from voicing herself at home as much
her first encounter with a demon happens during a talent show in her highschool when she sees on out of the corner of her eye during her performance. this results in a public freak out and her tossing the mic stand directly at this demon causing it to disappear. she’s given a weeks worth of detention for her outburst and she’s convinced it’s ruined any of her chances at her Hollywood dreams. the students also start looking at her weird after the fiasco
zoey goes to South Korea not as a trainee for any idol groups but as an exchange student for her English class
it’s there that she happens upon an open karaoke bar when out with her newfound friends. it’s the second time she comes across demons but a hoard of them as she’s on stage. this time however she spots two figures who quietly dispose of them and something in her compels her to sing louder and stronger to help them. this is also the first time she visually sees the Honmoon lines
Celine finds her later that night before her and her friends leave and she pitches her idea of a girl group to zoey and promises to answer all the questions she has about these monsters she’s been seeing
zoey doesn’t immediately accept and instead lets Celine know that she’d like to finish her schooling in America and think about it before she makes the big move
when she goes back she’s put in touch with Rumi who becomes like an online friend to her, someone she can gush to about music and whose brain she picks about everything that happened in the karaoke bar
it’s this friendship that develops with rumi that helps her solidify her decision and she tells her parents on the day of graduation that she’ll be moving to Korea by the end of next week to pursue her dreams
