in response to coxswain's bags, I usea jansport mesh backpack. it's one of the best purchases I've ever made, ahaha. (: I carry my boys' waters and sunscreen and crap because they're not the brightest bulbs, and I'd like them to concentrate on not dropping my boat instead of juggling their stuff. The bag is full of holes, so it leaks water on me, but it never has to be dried out or cleaned (and I'm already wet anyway).
