Do you believe that Finn is a good guy with MANY flaws or that he's genuinely an asshole?
If I could look only at season 1 Finn, I’d say he was a nice guy with many, many faults, but the way he is written now makes it really hard for me to see him that way.
I used to be able to see his regret over his douchey behavior, and I’m not saying that Glee did a great job writing that even then, but to some degree, the remorse was there, and the willingness for him to humble himself. For example, he dressed in the Lady Gaga costume to support Kurt, because he recognized that using the word ‘faggy’ was wrong.
But about mid-way through season 2, they stopped writing any of the other characters checking Finn’s actions, so there was no reason to write regretful Finn. Instead, I’m looking at a character who didn’t show any visible remorse for outing Santana, or even any acknowledgement that he felt his actions were wrong, but instead said he was scared for her, and wanted her to accept herself, and it came off as being very condescending.
The same thing happened at Prom with Quinn. He chose to run with her and didn’t tell Rachel what he was doing until after the fact, but he didn’t acknowledge that he was wrong to disregard Rachel’s feelings in the first place, and instead blamed Quinn for ‘playing’ him, felt justified in trying to drag her out of the wheelchair to prove she was ‘faking,’ showed no remorse for that action, and then showed up at the hotel to tell Rachel that he couldn’t stay at prom because he really wanted to be with her, making himself seem like a great guy.
And then, of course, the writers made the next wonderful decision to have Finn trick his fiancé to get her to the train station, only then having the conversation with her that he should have had the moment he decided he should join the army and she should go to New York, and rationalized that very controlling behavior with the reasoning that he was doing it all for Rachel.
Finn Hudson, right now, no longer shows any signs that he even realizes that anything he is doing is wrong. So yeah, Glee has turned him into an outright asshole, in my opinion. Until he is written in a way that allows me to see his regret, and his acknowledgement of his mistakes, I can’t see him any other way.
