Yesterday I got to attend a heritage awards ceremony, which was hosted by the Lieutenant-Governor. The door was opened by a man in full military dress. A woman in an honest-to-goodness maid's uniform directed me to the cloakroom. The ceremony itself was held in a lovely drawing room dominated by a huge portrait of the queen. Also present were paintings of Victoria and Albert, King George the Something (I assume he was a George. He might have been an Edward), and the Queen Mum and George VI. There was trompe l'oeil. There were fancy rondels. There was a marble fireplace. On the mantle of the fireplace (directly below the portrait of King Georgward) was, inexplicably, a little plaque reading "This is our happy place", of the sort you would buy at Michael's.

Afterwards, there was tea and pastries in the other two drawing rooms, where we were watched over by more Georgwards, Prince Philip, and Queens Mary and Alexandra.
