Not YouTube recommending a podcast with Jack Ryder from a few years ago to me where Jack states that he decided to take a break from Eastenders due to suffering burnout from playing Jamie, and the he felt the vibe that the reason why the character was killed off was because the writers/producers felt that Jamie would never leave Sonia, so the only way for Jack to leave the show would be for Jamie to die and for Jack to permanently leave the show🥺💔

I know that Jamie and Sonia aren't a big ship on here, but while the higher-ups shouldn't have used the fate of Jamie as some sort of leverage to try to keep Jack from leaving, I agree with them that in that point in time in the story, Jamie cared so much about Sonia that him simply leaving her and/or the square wouldn't have felt right unless the two of them had a horrible break-up or something similarly drastic.

They were on-and-off for two years, had two proposals and even got a Julia's Theme when they previously broke up (which still blows my mind) - the show was invested in them as a ship while they were together and apart. The lover of tragic characters and love stories in me adores the ending that Jamie got - how it showcased his character, his backstory with his parents and his relationships with Billy, Phil and Sonia. His death even had ripple effects for months and years after his death, and it cemented his legacy so that he could be referenced over twenty years later.

Would he be as widely remembered if it wasn't for his death storyline? Maybe not, but I'm glad that the show knew that they had something special with Jamie and Sonia, and gave Jamie a send-off that was worthy for such an underrated gem of a character.
