Double Dog Dare

“Come on little lady...let me buy your next drink.”
Sophie wasn’t good at turning people down. She lacked the confidence for quick and dismissive responses, and the poker face to manage a convincing lie. There would be no insistence that she was waiting for someone to join her, no sort of verbal fight at all. The girl would shake her head, clinging tighter to her drink as the persistent male seated himself next to her. She just waited to drink without being completely alone, wanted the warm gloss of whiskey to blur the world at the edges.
Her gaze moved to the right and then the left. At the far end of the bar one seat was unclaimed next to a male. He didn’t look like the type to persistently hit on a girl who wasn’t interested...no...he looked like he was just there to lose himself in liquor too. Perhaps she’d be safer in that seat. Wordlessly she pushed off the bar stool, skittering with an almost apologetic yet relieved glance over her shoulder towards the seat.
“Hi,” she greeted softly as she slid into her new space. “I hope this is okay. It seems I won’t get away with drinking on my own tonight...I’m hoping if I sit next to you that guy down there will stop trying to buy me cosmo’s when I’m clearly a whiskey girl.”
