Done & Bum
I started the day with a headache and have finished it with a sore bottom. As the anaesthetist plumped my pillow & prepared the lines for this morning’s colonoscopy, she announced to the room that “Marianne is already so relaxed and she hasn’t even had anything yet!” It’s true, I’ve had many procedures and was just looking forward to drifting off into lalaland and catching up on some sleep.
There was a teenage girl awaiting her turn when I left the recovery suite. Her mum was sitting with her, holding her hand. She had round, scared eyes. I wonder if it was her first. If she had a diagnosis yet. We’re mostly young when we’re diagnosed; given our life sentence of pain, bloating, gas, diarrhoea, blood & drugs. I wanted to squeeze her foot through the blanket and reassure her.
I have lost count of how many colonoscopies I’ve had - I have been living with this disease a LONG time. Despite my small frame, I have what gastro’s call a ‘long and difficult colon’ (all the more inflammation real estate). This was my second colonoscopy with this doctor and he was smart enough to use a paediatric endoscope, which is longer, thinner & more flexible, so the procedure was speedier & smoother than past experiences.
Nothing new was revealed: extensive, active inflammation, ulcers (one of which was 3cm), no sign of cancer but biopsies were taken. Because I spend more time on prednisolone than off it, I’m finally getting to change medication. Now I just need to boost up my iron & Vitamin D and get my bone mineral density scan done and those damned regular women’s tests… it never ends!
