Words - Missing Persons (1982)
LAWRENCE W. ARTHOG
Epic Philip Labes “Sorry State” opinions!!
CANNONBALL! Is a wonderful song i loved since the single came out, definitely reminds me of Spring, and it makes perfect sense that it’s the opener (Philip Labes reference) The kids chorus is such a fun touch. Such an emotional look back on childhood while still managing to be super fun throughout.
Sorry State: Opening guitar thingy sounds like I Forget and that song’s good so surely this must be too. I didn’t listen to this one too much when it came out as a single but i saw the bits of each verse posted on YouTube. I love how he talks about all three places he’s lived and their pros and cons, but especially that last part about America in general. Powerful stuff.
Don’t Politicize This: this song might be a bit political though i may be interpreting it wrong. Not much to say here, it’s completely right in how politicians go crazy whenever anything bad happens to them, but everyone else seems to be expendable.
The King: HOLY SHIT! I completely understand why this is Philip’s favorite oh my god. The school system telling you you’re amazing because you passed their classes and not preparing you for the real world is so real. And the instrumentation??? Oh my god?? The trumpets?? Fantastic!!
It’s The Guns: Screw the 2nd amendment, all my homies hate the 2nd amendment! Yeah this song doesn’t hold back any punches on its message and it’s wonderful as well as sad.
It’s All Material: Never Date A Writer flashbacks? The slower tone with the piano is super nice to listen to, and the bridge oh my goodness. This was another single so I won’t go super in-depth but this one is also fantastic!
Echoes: THE STRINGS ARE BACK? Being about death, this is a beautiful song which, similarly to the start, sounds mostly upbeat until the bridge. And wow that bridge, as well as the last chorus, are heart wrenching.
AHHH this album is so good!!! Another certified Philip Labes classic
