I just finished catching up on your live-blogging Mail Order Bride and had to say I loved your perspective and insights! I got my copy in the mail the other day, and I can’t wait to read it again now that it’s been through editing and publishing since I last got to see it. I don’t think an official shipname was ever decided upon, but I took to calling them SOS. Worked for me since it put Orla in the middle, lol. I also had a silly headcanon that Beth made some sort of social media post mentioning “SOS” and a well-intentioned friend almost sent out emergency services. Or that Sam had inherited her mother’s penchant for shorthand and people thought she was being vague about an enby partner when she talked about her plans with SO and used they/them.
I know they went straight to being engaged when they brought Sorcha officially into the relationship so it doesn't quite work, but I have this recurring little joke that makes me smile of Beth showing a picture of the three of them to a co-worker and being like "This is my daughter Sam, and this is her betrothed Orla, and this is their date-mate Sorcha."
The coworker is like "Oh, because the sionnach are gender neutral, right?"
And Beth just smiles at them like. While the coworker is like "Right? Beth? It's a singular they right?" While Beth just gives this serene slightly unnerving smile.
Finally she's just like:
I think during like the epilogue liveblog (about as late in the story as I could get lbr) I called them Space Spouses a couple of times, so I'm gonna officially throw that into the ring as a possible name for the ship.
SOS is definitely a good shorthand for them but it's also an existing initialism so it could make tagging awkward. Though I guess with a tag you could add the book title acronym. Defs would work for like chat messages and in posts references to them though.
