Im Yoona; Beauty... Redefined.

The person that she is... The visual role in the group is often the most envious. In the exterior, one may say that the visual is the luckiest. They get the dramas, they get the best variety shows, they get the CFs... they get the whole lot, basically. But, lets just stop and think. Because they are the representative of the group, by default, the burden that they carry, becomes even heavier. When unnecessary criticism arises, they're the first to be affected. They're the first one to get hurt. But see, even when they were going through these not-so-great moments, Yoona's always carrying a brave smile. She never showed a moment of weakness. Spotlight's always on her. The pressure is always there. But not once, did she break her cool. She carried the group with a smile. That's how she, powered through. 

Even after seven years... ... I hope you continue to be person that you are. Beauty takes place in many forms. Although the most obvious sign of your beauty is your appearance, but truthfully, it's your character and personality that makes you truly beautiful. The alligator laughter, the weird dorky dances, and the flounder, probably does not go with the dictionary's definition of beauty. However, beauty should not conform to stereotypical beliefs. Beauty is subjective, and yours, is definitely shown through your bright personality and tomboy-ish nature. Have the happiest birthday Yoong! Here's to another year of ssanti dances, yes?

Lee Sunkyu; A Walking Sunshine.

The person that she is... Sunny, is simply, someone that we all should admire. She has once said that she was someone who came into the industry and limelight with a few handicaps. Entering the company less than a year before their debut itself was very disadvantageous for her. It was highly competitive, added with the fact that every other trainee would have already established close friendships with one another. Sunny, however, was never someone who fell 'short' of expectations. Ironic? Maybe. Instead, she stood 'tall' in any given situations, and allowed herself to stand out in her own way. Her character, her humbleness, friendliness, speaks for themselves. Take her stint on Invincible Youth 2 for example. She was the variety sunbae, but she's always making opportunities for her fellow friends to shine above her. That's the kind of person Sunny is. Humble. Supportive. And more importantly, someone who is always putting others before herself.

Even after seven years...  ... I hope you continue to be the little ray of sunshine that strengthens Girls' Generation. Sunny bunny, who's always mistaken as the maknae, but is mature like an eldest unnie... your place in the group is irreplaceable. You complete the group. Without you, the power of nine that we, sones, are most proud of, would not even exist. Thank you for always standing tall, and for always standing strong. Have the happiest birthday Sunny! Kim Taeyeon; A Leader's Heart.

The leader that she is... There are several reasons to why Girls' Generation became a success story. Friendship, is one. Talent, is another. However, there is one distinct reason to why this group could go on to their eighth year together without any discords or fights. That reason lies in their leader, Taeyeon. On paper, Taeyeon may not seem like the stereotypical leader. Leaders are usually quite forward, yet, our leader is one who follows her members. Ironic? Maybe. Is it a bad thing? No. Interestingly enough, to others, this may seem like a weakness. In reality, however, Taeyeon's greatest strength as a leader is that she leads with a humble heart. One of her greatest traits is that she inspires and encourages her members to lead. She knows that there is a time when one leader is needed, and when the time is there, she confidently steps out in front. She understands her role in the group, and recognises that her members also has potential to blossom into leaders of their own. She is the kind of leader who retreats, and lets her members take the spotlight at any given situation. When a difficult situation arises, she steps forward to tackle it. That is a true leader. Knowing when to retreat, and when to step forward. Leadership is knowing that the group was never all about her, but ultimately, it's about assisting her members into becoming the leaders that they were also born to be. 

Even after seven years... ... I hope you continue to become the fuel that drives Girls' Generation to reach an even higher peak. Young Taeyeon once stood on the side of the bridge and shouted to an empty audience that she could do it. She carried those dreams with her, and here we are... seven years later. Good on you, Taeyeon. You said you could do it, and you did just that. You said that you were thankful to SONEs for giving you the chance to love and be loved. Today, I'd like to give that gratitude back to you. For giving us the chance to love, and for loving us, thank you. Have the happiest birthday Taengoo! Here's to another year of dorkiness and your ahjumma tendencies :)

Choi Sooyoung; The Second Vignette.

The person that she is... Choi Sooyoung is a walking angel; one who is always putting others before herself. This is a girl who was hospitalised for a sacrovertebral fracture following a car accident, but forced a smile, through the pain, for her family and friends because she didn't want to worry them. This is the same girl who personally created a special video for her fans, for the same reason - not wanting us to worry about her. She was the one in pain, but she was the one comforting everyone else. Sooyoung is a person with a really big heart. There are many accounts of her volunteering, and helping those in need. From washing the dishes, preparing food for the elderly, helping the blind, she's done it all. Every one of these instances encapsulate just how humble and warmhearted she is. Sooyoung is truly one of a kind. A girl with a heart of gold. 

Even after seven years... ... I hope you continue to soar even higher and reach an even greater peak. Looking back at the past year, sure.. a lot has happened. However, as a fan of yours, there is no greater joy than seeing you find your happiness. In whatever circumstance, we are all here for you. Have a happy birthday Sooyoung! I am the most thankful to you, because without you, I won't be the SONE that I am today. Here's to another year of your weird dances, your random singing, and those epic imitations of yours! :)

A Vignette of Lee Sunkyu.

Lee Sunkyu, a portrait of growth; Ironic, isn't it? Not quite. When we associate the word 'growth', our first impression is to associate it with height - or 'physical growth'. If we look beyond the physical boundary of things, there isn't anyone who has experienced such growth like our dearest Sunny. During her debut days, she was known as that member with an overflowing amount of aegyo. Cute, cheerful, maknae-like, and sweet above all. Six years later, when we see Sunny, we see a woman who encapsulates courage, determination and versatility. When Taeyeon was dragged off-stage by an intruder, Sunny reacted the quickest, and without thinking twice of her own safety, she tried to help her member who was in danger. Courageous, indeed. Although she felt pressured by her handicaps during her debut days, she did not let it overwhelm her. Instead, she grew a determination to polish her strength, allowing her to become more versatile and adaptable. From having that ability to hit that higher register, to catching chicken, to MC-ing, to farming.. she is exceptional. 

Lee Sunkyu, through the eyes of Girls' Generation; To the members of Girls' Generation, Sunny is a lucky charm. Tiffany once said that that "lucky number 9" is forever engraved in her heart. For Girls' Generation, perfection, unity, and victory, is achieved at nine. Sunny's inclusion to the group brought existence to the number 9 in Girls' Generation. Without her addition in the group, nine would just be another number. Lee Sunkyu, indeed, brought completeness and unity to the group.

A Vignette of Jung Sooyeon.

Jung Sooyeon, a portrait of character; The saying "never judge a book by its cover" has been repetitively said over the years, to the point that it has became somewhat cliché and moot. Jessica Jung, however, is an exceptional example that truly defines this saying. Jessica is such a fascinating character. People often misconceive her of being cold; austere; expressionless; arrogant; and distant, based on her exterior. In contrast to what people stereotype her to be, she's a warm and dependable person that possesses a picturesque personality. Though she seems strong, Jessica can be quite fragile. She re-defines true meaning of individuality. On an old Chinchin broadcast, the members talked about a sad occasion when all nine members had a disagreement all at the same time. Yes, it was that dark time before Gee, when they were going through what they described as their slump year. In the midst of this disagreement, who was the first to tear up? Jessica. When the girls won the daesang on the 2010 GDA, which member was the first to be overwhelmed by emotions? Jessica. Not your stereotypical Ice Princess right? Of course not. Like what Yuri have said once, Jessica is like warm ice. She breaks every stereotype that bounds her. She is a truly unique individual.

“People says she’s cold and gain the nickname ‘Ice Princess’ but she’s actually very kind and not strong.” – Tiffany (to Jessica) “If I consider someone to be one of mine, then they’ll always be one of mine. I’ll always take care of them.” – Jessica

Jung Sooyeon, through the eyes of Girls' Generation; To the members of Girls' Generation, Jessica is a like reflection of the group. Her character speaks diligence. It took her seven and a half years of dedication to finally debut. She saw junior trainees debut before her, she had to wait a tad longer than everyone else to reach her goal. Her journey, reflects that of Girls' Generation's. The journey was far from smooth sailing in their early days; their successes were well earned. Dedication, perseverance, and diligence became a driving force that motivated them to work even harder.

Once, the little girl who cried being in front of the camera, she has now blossomed into a world icon. Have a happy birthday Jessica! Here's to another year of hating cucumbers and loving le aircon.

A Vignette of Kim Taeyeon.

Kim Taeyeon, a portrait of a selfless leader; Once in a while, an individual beats the stereotype. Of course, it doesn't happen very often. See, lots of people walk being pre-defined by a stereotype of some sort. The stereotype built a foundation for them, and most individuals try to adjust themselves to prove their worth. Not Kim Taeyeon. She did not try and be like every other leader; choleric and intimidating. Because that would mean she had to be someone else. She's soft, not outspoken. She's supportive, not demanding. She leads with a selfless heart, and a down-to-earth mindset. Being selfless meant that she had to put herself last, and everybody else takes priority. A very 'unleader-like' thing on the exterior right? Because you know, leaders are usually at the front. Wrong. A true leader is one who puts oneself last. Instead of taking priority, a leader stays behind and completes that missing void. In one variety show, the Soshi girls undertook a psychology test that required them to draw all at once. Remember what Taeyeon did? She waited. Waited until all eight members finished, and then she drew. She puts herself last. Great leaders are not made, but is birthed. A sound leader doesn't only accept who their members are, but they encourage their members to see their true potential, and what they can truly become. From one leader, another eight was born. That, in essence, is the beauty of Kim Taeyeon's leadership. 

Kim Taeyeon, through the eyes of Girls' Generation; To the members of Girls' Generation, Taeyeon is like an anchor. Oxford defines an anchor as a 'person that provides stability or confidence in an otherwise uncertain situation'. It is a person that can be relied on for support and security. In one radio broadcast during Gee promotional period, the girls talked about the struggles they faced as a group during their nine months hiatus. Lots of instances challenged their teamwork, even their friendship. This, is where Taeyeon's leadership shone. At that moment when the members felt insecure, Taeyeon provided a stability and confidence to the group. The fact that they are still standing strong, together as nine, is a testament of this. The ultimate measure of a leader is not where they stand in moments of comfort, but where they stand at times of trials and austerity. The mark of a true leader is encompassed through their perseverance, and their ability to shelter the group’s unity when shaken.

A Vignette of Choi Sooyoung.

Choi Sooyoung, a portrait of humbleness; Her artistic journey began at the age of twelve. Debuting at such a young age, in a place foreign to her. At the age of twelve she already experienced the hardships and struggles as a singer. In contrast to any artist, her form of transportation as an artist was an underground train. To feature in one show, she had to go through a long audition process. These adversities, however, planted diligence and humbleness into her character. She's become someone who is most thankful for her humble beginnings, and especially the preciousness of her members in her life.

"I will always keep it in my heart, and never forget our beginning." (2007). "We will always be the Girls’ Generation who will not forget how we felt in the very beginning." (2010) - Choi Sooyoung.

Choi Sooyoung, through the eyes of Girls' Generation; To the members of Girls' Generation, Sooyoung is like a protector. Not a physical protector per se, but one that emotionally shelters her members in every situation. Like Yuri said, Sooyoung is always the first person the members think of when they are in trouble or doubt. She's also a consoler, and a pillar of support. When Taeyeon wanted to step down as leader, Sooyoung was the one who reached out to her. There is a sense of comfort in Sooyoung's presence, which is why her members always find a sense of familiarity with her. Being a protector goes beyond the stereotypical duty of guarding a person, however, it's about sheltering another's well being and embracing wholeness in a group.
