I've heard of Florence + The Machine but I don't think I've ever heard an actual song by her. At least, until I saw in theaters the new trailer for "The Great Gatsby" with Leonardo DiCaprio. The enhanced bass (and, subsequently, a damaged ear drum) plus the intro to "Bedroom Hymns" and the "woah~o~ohohoh~" part equals intense and catchy. And the song kinda fits Gatsby, in a way (with my limited knowledge on Gatsby).
The first time I heard "Bedroom Hymns" was at AMC while waiting for "Les Miserables" to start. The bass and drumsticks intro already caught my eye but I kind of forgot about it after watching "Les Mis" (because omg les mis. all my feels for les mis). Then, I heard it two days in a row during Midwinter Day weekend (because one day off shouldn't be classified as a "break") while showing my mom "Les Mis" on Sunday and "The Hobbit" on Monday. It was on Sunday that I was like, "Whoa. This song. So intense. Must remember. The Great Gatsby trailer." But, I forgot again after watching "Les Mis" (and being overcome with feels) and "The Hobbit" (and also having too much hobbit feels).
So today, I finally remembered to search up the song from the new "The Great Gatsby" trailer and found this song.
To be honest, I think the trailer and the theater affects gave me really high expectations for the song (because of the amplified bass and the deafening volume everything was played at). So "Bedroom Hymns" wasn't as great as I'd thought it'd be (also because the trailer took all the catchy parts and left everything else out, thereby further increasing my expectations). But, nevertheless, this song is still great.
The intro and "woah~o~ohohoh~" parts still get me every time because they're just so catchy. ._. And the background instrumentals too. It's just one big, catchy song with it's pop-rock-indie combination.
The lyrics are a bit too sexual for my liking...so I tend to try and not pay too much attention to the lyrics. ._.
But yeah. Maybe I should talk a bit about Florence + the Machine. The British band started off in 2007 with Florence Welch and Isabella Summers collaborating with other artists to get the background instrumentals. They were known as Florence Robot/Isa Machine until they shortened it down to Florence and the Machine, feeling like Florence Robot/Isa Machine was too cumbersome. Florence and the Machine's first album, Lungs, was released in July 2009 and had already sold over 100,000 by August. The album hit number one and two in the UK and Ireland, respectively, and number one on US Billboard's Heartseekers Albums chart. Florence and the Machine's have also been used in various TV shows and movies such as Glee, Gossip Girl, Grey's Anatomy, The Vampire Diaries, and Eclipse from the Twilight series. The Machine's second album,Ceremonials, was released in October 2011, debuting number one on UK Albums chart and number six on the US Billboard 200.
