wang zhi: 20, gay, intersex (AIS). head of information at taiping, right hand to zhu jianshen; scouted tang fan and sui zhou; really likes fancy wines

tang fan: 28, lesbian, gnc; private investigator, often contracts with taiping to track down info; pretty visibly gnc, so the PI position started out as a necessity; met sui zhou while working and convinced her to let her and dong'er move into the apartment she inherited

sui zhou: 31, lesbian, gnc, PCOS; ex-military, passed as a man for over a decade, still confuses people; works a nondescript IT job now with taiping; worked as a line cook for a while, hence her skills in the kitchen

dong'er: 13, questioning; adopted by tang fan after her entire family died; knows what's going on with suitang, is watching with popcorn; scarily smart, wants to study as an engineer or physicist

pei huai: 29, bi; works as a pharmacist; college friends with tang fan; self-experiments :)

tang yu: 32, bi; formerly a stay at home wife, currently a secretary; pei huai was her bi awakening; practices and collects works of calligraphy

misc notes:

— taiping is actually 太平后勤公司/taiping logistics company, the name is very vague but they essentially deal in problem-solving for other corporations. the name is after the taiping princess because zhu jianshen has Aspirations (the fact that it's also the unfortunate name of the taiping rebellion is something no one dares to mention)

— the show ostensibly takes place in beijing but for fun and personal reasons i'm making it set in dongbei. tang fan and tang yu and sui zhou are all from taiwanese immigrant families though (because i have to justify the accent somehow)

Watch Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty with us!

Queer Watch Party is starting off strong with Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty, a Chinese drama based on a BL novel. Due to censorship, SOTMD isn't explicitly queer, but it sure does feature the very twinky Tang Fan, a genius criminal investigator writes erotica on the side to support his very expensive food obsession.

Tang Fan teams up with Sui Zhou, a court guard with a troubled past (who also happens to be an amazing cook), court schemer and master manipulator Wang Zhi, and Tang Fan's accidentally acquired child Dong'er. As the series progresses Tang Fan manages to add more and more people to his clown car of an adopted family. The show is really funny and touching.

Hi! Just wanted to throw in a suggestion for books to read: "The Fourteenth Year of Chenghua" by Meng Xi Shi. It's the novel the tv series "Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty" was adapted from, and it's written by the same author as "Thousand Autumns" and "Peerless".

SOTMD was a book????????? Did I know this????????? Brb writing this down...

I had that ask the other day asking  me to make the case for Scum Villain, which I didn’t feel qualified to do, but here is a show I will make a case for 

you should all watch sleuth of the ming dynasty 

it tells the tale of 

the world’s most annoying clever twink

as well as

the soldier whose PTSD can only be cured by feeding said twink delicious-looking meals 

plus 

the shady imperial eunuch who keeps inviting himself over for brunch 

everyone has incredible hats and it walks a perfect ine between being inoffensively pro law and order and being like wait what if this emperor’s bland incompetence is in fact incredibly threatening. also the plausible deniability hetero romance is.... very funny in its half-assedness
