three holidays soumya loved and one she hated
For @just-a-clever-fool
1. As long as she can remember, Soumya has loved her family’s golu best--her ancestors’ wooden carvings of the gods displayed at the bottom, and the clever figurines her father had created of dancers, farmers, and a tiny family with three smiling girls at the top.
If she had her way she would display them year-round, but: “No,” Mother says, packing them away with a wistful smile, “they’re too precious for that.”
2. She can never admit it, but Mattu Pongal is her favorite of the four festival days. Soumya doesn’t care for the smell of cattle, nor for investigating their digestion by way of their dung like Kamala does; and Meenu is far better at decorating their foreheads and horns; but the looks of delight on her sisters’ faces makes it all worth it.
3. Diyas are not practical and fireworks are dangerous, and Soumya rails against them whenever she can; but Deepavali gives her a chance to indulge her delight, and obligingly, her mother and sisters say nothing.
&1. Year after year, Soumya watches Mother look at brothers and sisters greeting each other joyfully; and year after year, Mother’s face grows hard and pinched; and so she dreads Karthigai Deepam above any other day.
Rumya ❤️
Rumya are so fricking underrated. I just watched todays episode and I found it so beautiful how Soumya was just so supportive, not to the point of invasive but you can see that she genuinely cares for him and I think Rudra really appreciated that too. I mean, he’s always been babied by the family yet Soumya was there like a pillar of strengh for him!
