I finally got my hands on some issues of “For Proletarian Music,” the short-lived Soviet music journal Shostakovich probably had a beef with in the early 30s. I was specifically looking to see if the representative of the Ukrainian Association for Proletarian Musicians that Shostakovich harassed in Odessa really did write to the journal about it (she threatened to do so and I support her). I haven’t found anything relating to that yet, but I might have found something even more interesting -- a polemic among Jewish composers and musicologists about how to make “properly revolutionary/proletarian” Soviet Jewish music. I have a lot more reading to do now, and at least 7 new-to-me composers to listen to. Which might involve digging up lost sheet music from the 1930s and getting someone to play it for me because there aren’t any accessible recordings of some of their work. Which is why I’m in academia.
