Day 5: Perfecting the Elevator Pitch
Since graduating, I can not tell you how many times I have been asked "So what do you do?" Being an admin specialist for an organization can make it hard to come up with an exciting answer to this question. It usually goes along the lines of "I support a 5 person office by scheduling meetings, planning events, and keeping the office together through various day-to-day tasks." Riveting huh? It's no wonder why I am usually met with blank stares after this answer.
So I spent some time thinking about what my elevator pitch should be to really reflect what I "do." I do a lot more than my admin specialist job. In fact, I usually don't even mention the things that I do that I am actually excited about. So after thinking on that, here is my new answer to the question, "So what do you do?"
I work at the University of Minnesota assisting students, faculty and staff in the Academic Health Center to ensure they have structured opportunities to pursue their passions abroad. Outside of work I am working on my first novel and slowly figuring out where I want to go with the next few years."
I haven't tested this new "elevator pitch" out with anyone, but I would guess that answer would be met with much more excitement than my previous one. While it can be difficult to answer, I really do like the question "So what do you do?" It is so broad. For some reason I always answer in relation to my current job, but I do so much more than that! Today's prompt helped me to see how that simple question can be an exciting opportunity to share my passions with someone.
