Emoji Review: Milky Way/Galaxy/Universe/Space Emoji

A classic. Quite stellar if I do say so myself. The color scheme is a bit off, and the stars a bit too stylized for my liking, but a valiant effort on Apple’s part to depict the galaxy we call home in Emoji form. 8/10.

What the fUCK is this?? This is a Van Gogh painting gone wrong. Totally wrong color-scheme, the purple is too vibrant, the Milky Way is not a perfectly arced SWOOP for goodness sake, and why the fuck are some of the stars YELLOW? Excuse you, Google. This is NOT how you represent space. Show some respect. 2/10.

An interesting perspective, taken from the outside as opposed to its other emoji counterparts. While I’m normally not a fan of the thick black borders Microsoft so often uses, it works here in that it can be interpreted as the universe outside of the Milky Way. The colors work well together, and I like that the galaxy is not a perfect circle, rather the tips of it are unfinished and sticking out in true Milky Way fashion. All in all, an intriguing take. 6.5/10.

I have mixed feelings about this one. As a Samsung user myself, this is the emoji I am most accustomed to running across. I like the tinges of fuchsia in the sky, but how realistic is it? True, these colors have been spotted in nebulas, but not in our own Milky Way. Nevertheless, a pretty color scheme and a nice aesthetic, if not a realistic one. (also THIS IS WHAT STARS ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE. TAKE NOTE OTHER ELECTRONIC COMPANIES. TAKE. NOTE.). 7/10.

now THIS is what the Milky Way looks like!!!!!!! A Beautiful Emoji, truly. The color scheme is subtle, the mountains don’t take up too much space and allow for just enough contrast with the night sky, the stars are intricately placed and look beautiful against the turquoise and deep blue of their setting. Perfect. 10/10.

Fuck outta here with this bullshit. This ain’t the Milky Way or any other galaxy for that matter, this is a collection of stickers from a kindergartner’s math workbook. -1/10.

A more ~aesthetic~ take on the LG space emoji, WhatsApp takes a risk by including some sort of beam of light (a comet? a UFO perhaps? I always knew they were out there) extending down to the black mountain range below. While I do not appreciate the lack of stars in this emoji, the beam is an interesting artistic choice, and a risk I can appreciate and commend. 6/10.

A very muted, dusky representation of Our Home!!!! I like this a lot. Facebook separates itself by making the majority of the sky purple and pink rather than blue and green, but it works here. The colors are also not too vibrant and poppy, and work well together. The stars are also very nice. Well Done! 9/10.

 While the inclusion of trees rather than a mountain range is a nice deviation from the norm of Milky Way emojis, this is all wrong. The colors are blocky and the sky looks like a layered cake––and not in a good way. At leas the stars look right, but they’re all clustered together. Go back to Intro to Astronomy and try again. 4/10.

What is this, a discotheque?? Fuck no. This is terrible. The stars are not supposed to be giant circles nor does the sky look like the inside of that lava lamp you bought in the 7th grade and broke in the 9th. Moreover, what the fuck is up with those mountains? Are they gelatinous? This is disappointing, even for Twitter. 2.5/10.

Wow, I thought Twitter’s take on the Milky Way was appalling, but this one takes the cake. WHAT AM I LOOKING AT HERE??? PINK STARS??? And why is the sky two-toned? WHERE THE FUCK IS THAT PINK AND PURPLE COMING FROM??? This reminds me of a sequined dress my cousin owned when we were 6 that we used to dress up as. Do you know what happened to that dress? I don’t know, but I get the feeling that whatever did happen to it should also be done to this Emoji. 2/10.

Now I will admit that I was apprehensive of emojidex’s take on this emoji, as they usually fuck up everything they touch, but I must say, I am pleasantly surprised by how this came out!! Not a fan of the khaki-like green that’s smudged in the sky, but that beam of light looks very nice! And the stars are very commendably realized as well. And look––those mountains actually look like mountains. A good-bordering-on-great effort overall. 7/10.

Oh dear. Why must we end on such a disappointing note? This isn’t right at all. I love this shade of purple but it looks all wrong here. Those mountains look like dromedaries performing a human centipede-like sex act. The stars and whatever the fuck those dots are supposed to be look all wrong. The colors are blobby and look like marshmallows but in a very bad way. You’ve let me down, Mozilla. You really have. 3/10.
