Space Interrupted is a collabora*on between curator Clare Sheppeard and three ar*sts from theSouth East region. Zoe Fudge, Sharon Haward and Rachel Wilberforce who have been inspired bythe town of Margate and specifically its old electricity substa*on. Drawing on the history of this functional site the work created reflects both its u*litarian func*on as a provider of power to homes and businesses but also to Dreamland and nearby amusement arcades – the realm of fantasy and escape. Audiences will be able to explore the site through artists' responses to the space, experiencing a sense of place through sculptural installations, projec*ons and light based work. Each work enhances highlights or disrupts the integrity of the building.
Artist and architect Zoe Fudge creates work informed by her training in Architecture, building accumula*ve constructions which test and explore themes around structure, connections and material qualities. For Space Interrupted Zoe explores the tension that arises from the delicacy of construction and the inherent qualities of particular materials.
Sharon Haward uses a range of media to upset the sensory and narra*ve sense of place. At the Substa*on Sharon uses architectural structures, projec*ons and sound recordings to make a fragile and fractured installation that enfolds the audience in the space and provokes a sensory experience of the building.
Rachel Wilberforce uses photography, collage, video and installa*on. She is drawn to places with uncertain borders, sites on the edge, cut off and precarious, hovering between different histories, uses and meanings. For Space Interrupted Rachel will re-frame original, mixed gas lighting from Deamland to prompt ques*ons about our rela*onship with everyday spaces and the poten*al for our mind to dissociate space, or reveal the transcendental.
Curator Clare Sheppeard has worked with local, na*onal and interna*onal ar*sts in a variety of sites e.g. David Batchelor, Mariele Neudecker, Karin Van Pinxterern and Emma Critchley. Projects include Curator Coastal Currents Fes*val Has*ngs, Jerwood Gallery Has*ngs, Venice Biennale, Van Abbemuseum, Independents Liverpool Biennial. Recent projects include site specific commissions with Alice Anderson and Kate MccGwire.
For of Space Interrupted we have collaborated with Margate Museum and local people for ‘point & shoot’ photographic tours. The resulting photographs will be displayed at a range of venues around Margate including the Railway Sta*on, Limbo and Dreamland Arcade, plus other loca*ons around town to be discovered by viewers.
